The mosaic finds unearthed in the frigidarium space of the building, which is known in the literature as the Balatlar Church and whose first establishment is understoodto be the Roman Imperial Bath, is a unique material that differs in style and iconography from the mosaics unearthed in Sinop and its surroundings. Mosaics made in the opus tesselatum technique, which can be dated to the end of the 4th century and the beginning of the 5th century, as a result of the data and stylistic analyzes obtained in the studies, have an important position in Byzantine art and Christian iconography with their unique composition schemes. One of the most striking examples of these mosaic finds unearthed during the Balatlar Church Excavation is the mosaic panels numbered 3 and 6, which contain scenes on the “refri...

Though to be too limited, the samples of Byzantine murals in the region Lycia of Anatolia demonstrate some characteristics of the capital Constantinople and Cyprus. It is surprisingly possible to observe in some Cypriot churches the closest samples of the murals in the church which is located in Myra, the present-day Demre, and was consecrated to Saint Nicholas and in the chapel at the antique settlement of Myra.
The murals of the annexing spaces to the north and south of Saint Nicholaos in Demre are dated to 12th century in terms of painting cyclus, stylistic and iconographic features. The paintings here display unique iconographic characteristics in Anatolian scale. The very similar samples of those in the burial space at the southern annex can be traced in the Cypriot murals dated to the 12th century. The nearest samples in stylistic terms in Cyprus are those probably produced with an artistic approach of the capital. Thus, it is possible to speculate under the light of the Mediterranean samples on the local/regional effects in the wall paintings of the annexing spaces, depending on the common iconographic characteristics with Cyrus and Sicily.
The chapel at the antique settlement of Myra has some common features along with original regional characteristics with the murals dated to the 12th century in Cyprus and especially in the Church of Saint Nicholaos in Demre. The painting cyclus seems to be directly related with the ritual of the church. That Mary wished for intercession and consolation from Christ for ‘the salvation of the mortals’ as written on the roll held by her on the Deesis scene confirms this point of view of us. It is quite remarkable to encounter with the very same version of this inscription in a mural in Cyprus dated to the 12th century.
The characteristics of the murals at the chapel in Myra resemble those at the annexing spaces, dated to the 12th century, in the Church of Saint Nicholaos. Because of the common features with the samples under the capital effect in Cyprus, the murals at the chapel and the Church of Saint Nicholaos are thought to have been applied in 12th century by the Constantinopolitan artists or the Cypriot artists with a Constantinopolitan background. Thus, it is possible to offer that the murals at the narthex and naos of the chapel were accomplished in the first and second half of 12th century by the local artists decorating the Church of Saint Nicholaos in the region with murals and probably owning a Constantinopolitan background.
The capital and local effects observed in the murals at the chapel at Myra and the Church of Saint Nicholaos dated to the 12th century may have arrived via Andriake, a prominent port-city of the age connecting for ages Myra with the Mediterranean world and the capital in cultural and commercial terms. The murals actually reveal Myra’s these intense relations with Cyprus and the capital in these centuries.
