Special thanks to Julia Irwin, Brian Connolly, and Philip Levy who engaged with me during the semester, summer classes, and/or serve on this thesis committee. Frances Ramos taught a small yet productive class, her encouragement sent parts of this thesis off to four conferences. David Johnson brought me to the topic of prison activism; he made me a better writer and provided helpful suggestions. I greatly benefited from his expertise and could not have wished for an advisor more patient and supportive. Warm thanks to Martin Dyckman, who shared his knowledge on Raiford. Lukas and Nora read parts and Chris the whole thesis, they generously provided suggestions and feedback, thank you. Living in Florida proved difficult from the onset, but a group of special people made it a fun experience, thanks to Chris, Jonathan, Lindsay, and Ryan, partners in crime at the history department and beyond. Reuniting with the part-time Floridians from Europe, Ellen, Johanna, and Mykhailo, should be quite easy-thank you for fun days and nights, see you soon. Heartfelt thanks to the crew of Well Built Bikes, Andy and Chris you made my Thursdays worthwhile, keep up the important work. Keeping in touch proved difficult and easy at the same time. Although no longer living together still sucks, I thought about Nora, Lisa, and Vanessa everyday-they are my special squad. I enjoyed when friends made the trip to Tampa, thanks to Marlene, Mira, and Vanessa. Another special person was scheduled to make the trip several times; then she did not have to. Teresa I am happy to share past and future adventures with you.

This article analyzes how first responders established themselves as intermediaries between patients and the medical clinic and sought legitimacy from authorities as medical professionals. First responders contributed to processes of medicalization, widely shared information on patients, and readily deferred to police at a time of rapid change. Drawing on Viennese newspapers and the WFRG’s annual reports and daily logbooks, the author shows how first responders dealt with public scrutiny, conscripted themselves into the fight against malingerers, and joined authorities in administratively surveying and morally policing patients’ bodies. In their quest to gain social and professional legitimacy, first responders’ medicalizing practices and deference to existing authorities went hand in hand.

civilians who suffered large-scale deportation and forced migration, form main themes of
20th century history. This conference, held by Kerstin von Lingen from the Institute
of Contemporary History at Vienna University, aimed at historicizing these events and
practices, visualising geographies, tracking movements and unearth levels of agency and
decision-making on structural and individual levels, forming the point of departure for further research into patterns of displacement and resettlement.

Continuities and new emotions promoting the consumption of coffee are being researched as well as the staging of coffee as an Austrian product and the gender aspects of coffee advertisements. 107 spots have been found, 47 of them were aired in the given time and 18 of them were closely analyzed following findings of Kuchenbuch.
