Bane NOR is the Norwegian Railway Infrastructure Manager that is responsible for implementing ERTMS on the Norwegian railway network.
The Norwegian Government decided in 2012 that all future signalling systems shall be based on the European standard ERTMS. Norway is obligated to implement EUs Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI) into Norwegian law, under Norway’s membership in the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA).
BaneNOR is about to undertake a major renewal of signalling systems throughout the network, which includes the implementation of ERTMS. This also includes retrofitting of the train fleet with ERTMS.

COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS
The following railway Norwegian railway lines are operational with ERTMS.
Østfoldbanens Østre linje
- Line description: 7 stations, 17 level crossing systems, 2 level transition areas
- Length of the line: 80 km
- ETCS level used on the line: ETCS Level 2 (B2)
- Supplier of the ERTMS Trackside: Bombardier
- Supplier of the ERTMS Onboard: Bombardier
- Supplier of the ERTMS TMS: Bombardier
- Train types operating on the line: Stadler Flirt EMU
- ERTMS operational from: August 2015
Gjøvikbanen (Northern part)
- Line description: 4 stations, 9 level crossing systems, 1 level transition area
- Length of the line: 67 km
- ETCS level used on the line: ETCS Level 2 (B3R2)
- Supplier of the ERTMS Trackside: Siemens
- Supplier of the ERTMS onboard: Alstom
- Supplier of the ERTMS TMS: Hitachi
- Train types operating on the line: Stadler Flirt EMU
- ERTMS operational from: November 2024
STM STATUS AND PERSPECTIVE
STM will be required to enable trains to operate onboth ERTMS and ATC lines during the migration phase to ERTMS. The legacy system used in Norway is EBICAB 700.
OTHER (GSM-R/GRP/…)
The whole Norwegian Railway Network is equipped with GSM-R / GPRS.
