We’re excited to announce today the world’s first human procedure of our graphene-based cortical interface in a patient undergoing brain tumor resection. 🧠🧠 Our BCI tx technology is able to differentiate between healthy and cancerous brain tissue with micrometer-scale precision. The study was sponsored by the The University of Manchester and primarily funded by the European Commission’s Graphene Flagship project. The Guardian covered us in their business live newspage today: Graphene implant used for first time in brain tumour op A brain implant made from graphene was used successfully during brain tumour surgery at Salford Royal Hospital, to help the medical team cut out the tumour without damaging healthy tissue. It was the first human procedure involving a graphene brain implant, which allows the surgeon to distinguish between healthy and cancerous brain tissue with micrometer-scale precision. The procedure, carried out yesterday, was successful and the device was on the patient’s brain for 79 minutes. It was the start of a clinical study of the device, made by INBRAIN Neuroelectronics, a Barcelona-based company which developed the implant with the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and Manchester University. During the trial, the medical team at Salford Royal hospital places the device with 64 graphene electrodes on the brain of a patient with glioblastoma, a fast-growing brain cancer. It will stimulate and read neural activity with high precision so that other parts of the brain are not damaged when the cancer is cut out. The implant is removed after surgery. Seems the more I learn the less I know. Take graphene for instance. In the not too distant past, I would have had no idea its usefulness. Consider this: Graphene is a material made of a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal honeycomb structure. Strength: Graphene is 200 times stronger than steel of the same thickness. Conductivity: Graphene is highly conductive, both electrically and thermally. Flexibility: Graphene is flexible and lightweight. Temperature tolerance: Graphene can hold together at temperatures up to 1,300°F (700°C). Chemical resistance: Graphene is resistant to acids. Electronics: Graphene could be used to create flexible electronics and supercapacitors. Energy: Graphene could improve the performance of batteries by increasing their useful life and reducing charging time. Construction: Adding graphene to cement can increase its strength. Water treatment: Graphene could be used to purify or desalinate water. Graphene is extracted from graphite, and was first isolated by scientists who used sticky tape to peel thin flakes from a lump of graphite. Technology never stops. The applications are limitless. Exhibit A - INBRAIN Neuroelectronics. Their team, led by the incomparable Carolina Aguilar, have developed a brain computer interface using graphene based neural technologies. They had their first in human procedure recently. Their goal is to save the lives of patients with brain tumors. The procedure was performed at Salford Royal Hospital in the UK. The Neurosurgeon who was conducting the procedure is Dr. David Coope. Graphene provides ultra high density for sensing and stimulating which is critical for preserving functions such as movement, language or cognition. Extraordinary. Today, after several years of constant work, testing, validations, iterations, clinical feedback and an infinite list of supporters and partners, we finally, as a real team, made clinical history on BCI therapeutics. Today, we finally witnessed how graphene unfolds its societal impact!!! This world’s first graphene brain implantation is built from the shoulders of Nobel Laureates Geim & Novoselov, pioneers such as Jose Antonio Garrido, Kostas Kostarelos, Anton Guimerà Brunet and many others and driven by the amazing INBRAIN Neuroelectronics team which grit to a great purpose has been truly admirable. However, the one that beared the whole burden today was Dr. David Coope whose collaboration over the last 3 years has been extraordinary. WIRED reporter Emily Mullin speaks with our CEO Carolina Aguilar about the procedure today. 🧠🧠 This morning, surgeons at The University of Manchester temporarily placed a thin, Scotch tape-like implant made of graphene on the patient’s cortex—the outermost layer of the brain. Made by Spanish company InBrain Neuroelectronics, the technology is a type of brain-computer interface, a device that collects and decodes brain signals. InBrain is among several companies, including Elon Musk’s Neuralink developing BCIs. “We are aiming to have a commercial product that can do #brain decoding and brain mapping and could be used in a variety of disorders,” says Carolina Aguilar, InBrain’s CEO and cofounder. Brain mapping is a technique used to help plan brain surgeries. When taking out a brain tumor, for instance, surgeons place electrodes on the brain to determine the location of motor and speech function in the brain so that they can safely remove the tumor without affecting the patient’s ability to move or speak.
