This case study provides an outline of the module, its aims and assessment methods, introduces some of the resources used to support the module and reviews student responses regarding the challenges and benefits of integrating key skills into a final-year module as they prepare to make the transition into the world of work. It is widely accepted that effective use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in learning requires the learner to be already fluent in them (Lai and Morrison 2013: 154). If this is the case, then practitioners also need to be competent, yet the digital literacy of today's learners often appears greater than that of practitioners. This translates into a big gap between learners and practitioners in ability and confidence in the use of ICTs. In this paper, we present the outcomes of a research project funded by the University of Wollongong (UoW) on the creation of innovative teaching resources to integrate Interactive WhiteBoards (IWBs) more effectively in the classroom. It also provided training opportunities to improve quality learning and teaching practices and standards embedded in course design and delivery.

Research on the motivation of students and teachers and the differences between teachers’ beliefs and their actual classroom practice is ample but there is virtually nothing on teachers as students and the impact that being a student had on their teaching practise etc. In some ways, it seems that once you are a language teacher, you are expected to remember what it is like to study a language – from our experience this is not necessarily the case. WHO?: Our motivations (for participating?) varied among the participants. From just having fun, to forming a stronger group cohesion with colleagues, to challenge yourself being in the “other” side of the classroom experimenting to certain extent what students feel in class., to test and practice your memory skills, to use the acquired skills in an imminent trip to...

It is widely accepted that effective use of Information and Communication Technologies in learning and teaching requires the learner to be already fluent in them (Lai and Morrison 2013: 154). If we agree with this premise, then it becomes clearly apparent how this fluency in the use of ICTs is absolutely essential for practitioners.
In our teaching – learning paradigm, another determining factor is that today’s learners have ICT skills ingrained in them from an early age which is often not the case of practitioners. This translates into a big gap between learners and practitioners in ability and confidence to use ICTs.
In this paper, we present the outcomes of a research project funded by the University of Wollongong. We were tasked to create innovative teaching resources to integrate IWBs more effectively in the classroom and to provide training opportunities to improve quality learning and teaching practices and standards embedded in course design and delivery.
We describe and comment the resources we created as well as the features specific to IWBs we exploited and their impact on practice. We reflect on the various workshops we ran, regarding assumptions, self-perceptions and outcomes amongst practitioners.

Although research has shown that a period of immersion in the language and culture of the country is one of the most effective ways for boosting language proficiency skills, cross cultural knowledge and raising metalinguistic awareness, few of our students embark on semester or year length exchange programmes. Data reveals that for the majority of students (65%), financial constraints are the main barrier to study abroad. Since study abroad is not a compulsory part of the UOW Languages Major , our project seeks to showcase the academic, personal and professional benefits of the study abroad experience to motivate students to go on exchange to partner institutions in France and New Caledonia. The team will present the rationale for this project followed by the methodology. The third section will show preliminary results from the website and discuss wider implications for language learning in French and the Faculty.

The presentation:
(1) addresses inaccurate narratives about the value of language degrees;
(2) reviews some of the literature available about the use of interpreting and audio-visual translation in language learning;
(3) looks at how findings from the literature could be applied to earlier language learning settings (A1) than are traditionally considered (B2).

The Department of Language and Linguistics at Essex offers majors, minors and optional modules in French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish as well as a minor in Mandarin Chinese. Essex also runs a successful Languages for All programme which has over 1,000 students enrolled in non-credit bearing modules.
With its 600 undergraduate students, the Modern Language section is going through the shrinking pains felt across the sector. This situation seriously impacts the viability of language provisions and the University is now considering measures to improve its financial position.
The Modern Languages section faces a diversity of both external and internal challenges: at an external level, it is experiencing the same issues as others across the sector. Internally, it faces ambivalent support: the aspiration to protect language provisions conflicts with basic financial constraints. Consequently, the Modern Languages section has been tasked to reinvent itself to meet these challenges, i.e. guarantee the academic integrity and financial viability of its programmes.
This presentation focuses on the collaborative work of colleagues across languages to redesign the curriculum and create the innovative learning spaces and strategies allowing them to respond to QA reviews, the TEF and financial constraints.
