The main result of the workshop evidenced that approximately 20 inmates, aged between 17 and 21, voluntarily scar themselves, and that each scar bears a different meaning. Alongside the content analysis, a theoretical and psychoanalytical approach is followed. This approach touches upon scarring, linking it to phenomena such as “pasaje al acto” and acting out, as well as the role pain plays in the scarring process. The results of the investigation are related to the subjects’ impossibility to verbalize their internal emotional states.

In order to make this analysis, a brief description of the divinity of the Santa Muerte is detailed and the different ways it is venerated. Followed by the description, a psychoanalytic theoretical framework is described that touches upon the freudian and klenian formation of the superego through the Oedipus Complex. The results of the reflection are linked to unconscious wishes of death by its followers and how they can be related with the development of a punitive superego.
