DREM releases the publication "Demographic Statistics of the Autonomous Region of Madeira 2022" and updated the time series
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) has released the publication "Demographic Statistics of the Autonomous Region of Madeira 2022" and updated the time series, incorporating all demographic information disclosed throughout this year. These data can also be accessed on the Demography dashboard.
The main results are the following:
Resident Population - Population increased in 2022
- In 2022, the resident population in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) was estimated at 253,259 persons (119,062 men and 134,197 women), representing an increase of 566 residents compared to 2021.
- The crude rate of increase was positive at 2.2‰ (compared to 3.1‰ in 2021), a result of a positive crude migratory rate (7.6%) surpassing the negative natural growth rate (-5.3‰).
- The proportion of young population (under 15 years) continued to decrease, representing 12.5% of the total population (12.8% in 2021).
- The proportion of elderly (65 years or older) continued its upward trend in recent years, reaching 20.6% of the resident population (20.2% in 2021).
- Consequently, the ageing ratio continues to rise, with a maximum of 165 elderly persons per 100 young persons (158 in 2021).
Births and Fertility - Increase in the number of live births in 2022
- In 2022, there were 1,758 live births, children of mothers residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, up by 14 over 2021, resulting in a crude birth rate of 6.9 live births per thousand inhabitants, the same as in 2021.
- The total fertility rate increased from 1.23 children per woman in their child-bearing years (15-49 years) in 2021 to 1.25 in 2022 but still remains below the replacement level (2.1 children per woman).
- The average age of mothers at the birth of their first child decreased from 30.8 years in 2021 to 30.5 years in 2022. The average age of mothers at the birth of any child (regardless of birth order) also slightly decreased, from 32.3 to 32.2 years.
- Approximately 62% of live births occurred outside of marriage, with 41.8% involving parental cohabitation and 20.5% without parental cohabitation.
Mortality and Life Expectancy - Number of deaths in 2022 increased compared to 2021
- In 2022, there were 3,103 deaths in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, up by 228 (7.9%) over 2021. The crude death rate reached 12.3‰, higher than in 2021 (11.4‰).
- The number of deaths was higher in the Winter months (on average, 292 monthly deaths) and lower in the Summer months (on average, 243 monthly deaths).
- There were 3 deaths of infants under 1 year, 3 fewer than the previous year. The infant mortality rate was 1.7 deaths per thousand live births, a decrease from the rate in 2021 (3.4 deaths per thousand live births).
- Over the three-year period from 2020 to 2022, life expectancy at birth for the resident population in the Region was estimated at 78.77 years: 75.05 years for men and 81.63 years for women.
- The average life expectancy at age 65 for the entire resident population in the ARM was 17.95 years. Men at age 65 can expect to live an average of 15.38 more years, and women can expect 19.71 more years.
Marriage - Number of marriages increased in 2022 compared to the previous year
- In 2022, 1,139 marriages were celebrated, an increase of 31.5% compared to the previous year (+273 marriages).
- The crude marriage rate increased from 3.4‰ in 2021 to 4.5‰ in 2022.
- There were 29 same-sex marriages (30 in 2021), with 11 between men and 18 between women.
- More marriages occurred in August (151 marriages), and fewer in January (46 marriages).
- The average age at first marriage increased in 2022, with men at 34.9 years and women at 33.4 years (compared to 34.7 and 32.7 years, respectively, in 2021).
- 67.5% of the marriages celebrated were "first marriages" (both spouses were single).
- In 70.9% of the marriages in 2022, the spouses had previously shared a common residence.
- 71.7% of opposite-sex marriages were civil ceremonies, and 28.1% were Catholic ceremonies.
Divorce - Number of divorces increased in 2022 compared to 2021
- In 2022, 553 divorces were decreed, 102 more than in 2021, resulting in a crude divorce rate of 2.2‰ (1.8‰ in 2021).
- The majority of divorces involved opposite-sex couples, with only 2 divorces between women and 1 divorce between men.
- The average age at divorce was 48.1 years for men and 45.8 years for women (48.0 and 45.4 years in 2021, respectively).
- Of the divorces granted in 2022, 73.1% were the result of marriages lasting ten years or more, while 26.9% resulted from marriages with a duration of less than ten years.
Foreign Population - Foreign residents in the Region reach a 15-year high
- As of December 31, 2022, the foreign population residing in the Region totalled 11,793 persons, representing a 13.3% increase from 2021 (1,388 more persons).
- The foreign population was mostly composed of residents with residence permits (11,792), with only one holder of a long-term visa registered.
- Nationals from Venezuela (19.7%), the United Kingdom (11.8%), Germany (9.4%), and Brazil (9.2%) continue to represent the main foreign communities residing in the Region.
- The number of German nationals holding residence permits showed the greatest increase between 2021 and 2022, rising by 24.5% (from 888 in 2021 to 1,106 in 2022) and contributing 2.1 percentage points to the overall 13.3% increase.
- The municipalities where the foreign population has the highest proportion of total residents are Calheta (10.7%), Porto Santo (8.5%), Ponta do Sol (6.5%), and Funchal (5.7%).
