We work to shape a future worth living around the world. #JourneyOfChange 🇪🇹 🇩🇯 🇩🇪
About us
The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has been working in Ethiopia on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) since 1964. The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia is a landlocked country in the Horn of Africa. It is three times the size of Germany and has a population of around 102 million. Despite average economic growth of 10 percent since 2005, an estimated 30 percent of Ethiopians still live below the poverty line (World Bank). Ethiopia ranks 173rd of 189 countries in UNDP’s 2019 Human Development Index (category: low human development). For decades, the population of the Ethiopian highlands has been affected by increasing food insecurity stemming from high population growth, deforestation, and inappropriate agricultural production methods. The Ethiopian Government has developed an ambitious growth and transformation plan designed to address its objectives in these areas. It aims to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and double the country’s economic output. To accompany the plan, the government has put in place its Homegrown Economic Reform strategy, which focuses on reducing poverty, creating jobs for young people, and promoting economic growth. Germany is supporting this strategy and in November 2019 concluded with Ethiopia what is known as a reform partnership – an in-depth form of development cooperation with reform-minded African partner countries as part of the G20 Compact with Africa initiative. The registered offices of GIZ are in Bonn and Eschborn (Germany). - The GIZ-implemented regional programme Improving the Prevention of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the Horn of Africa conducted two three-day workshops on Design Thinking and Proposal Writing for selected Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in the Somali and Afar regions. These trainings were the beginning of a new round of the Community-Initiative Fund – an integral part of the project. By supporting selected CSOs technically and financially, they are empowered to develop and conduct their own awareness-raising activities. More than 20 representatives from both regions enhanced their skills and submitted precise, innovative, and actionable concept notes to address local challenges related to FGM and gender-based violence (GBV). By supporting these community-driven approaches, the project aims to transform people’s attitudes towards FGM and GBV. The workshops inspired critical and creative thinking about local challenges, empowering participants with the skills to prepare high-quality, solution-oriented proposals while enhancing their writing and presentation abilities. By laying a strong foundation for tackling issues like female genital mutilation (FGM) and gender-based violence (GBV), these workshops pave the way for future capacity-building training sessions that will further amplify our collective impact. The Improving the Prevention of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the Horn of Africa programme is implemented on behalf of the German Government. Starting with Power-to-X (#PtX) for Sustainable Aviation Fuel(#SAF) and #greenammonia in Ethiopia Ethiopia's electricity mix is already 98% renewable. The country has abundant additional #renewableenergy potential, and it is called the water tower of Africa. 32 government officials and private sector experts gathered last week to learn more about #greenhydrogen and PtX. The Ethiopian Ministry of Water and Energy hosted the training in collaboration with the GIZ-implemented Ethiopian-German Energy Cooperation programme and the International PtX Hub. After deep dives into production processes, storage and transport, economics, policy and #sustainability dimensions, the participants created their own visions with PtX for Ethiopia on the second day. Green ammonia for #greenfertiliser production – to reduce import dependency – and Sustainable Aviation Fuel SAF production with Ethiopian Airlines as off taker – show great potential to leverage PtX technologies for sustainable development. Participants also placed a high priority on how to leverage the momentum and investment interest behind #PtX to increase energy access and improve water management in the country. PtX has the potential to support Ethiopia's ambitions for green industrialisation, improved trade balance, and job creation. State Minister for Energy Development, H.E Dr Ing Sultan Wali’s speech highlighted the country's renewable energy potential and the need for domestic fertiliser production. He and Stephan Lidsba, coordinator for climate change cluster of GIZ Ethiopia and Djibouti handed over the training certificates to the participants. PtX Hub Director Torsten Schwab held the training. Thank you very much to the engaged speakers and participants. We look forward to continuing the process of defining Ethiopia's way forward with PtX, for which this training was just the starting point.Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH #JourneyOfChange #greenenergy #renewableenergy #greenammonia- +1
