ASHEVILLE - A man was critically injured by police in a shooting at the Westmont Commons apartment complex in Asheville on June 7.

The name of the man who was shot was not immediately released.

Asheville Police Department officers went to the apartment complex at around 6:17 p.m. on June 7 after several people reported that there was a man there with a knife, according to a police news release.

When officers arrived, they saw the man on a third-floor balcony, and he threw a chair and other items off the balcony, the news release said.

The man then came down the stairs, and police officers told him to drop the knife, the news release said.

At the bottom of the stairs, the man sprinted towards officers, wielding the knife, and officers opened fire, shooting him, the news release said.

The man was transported to Mission Hospital, where he was listed June 7 in critical but stable condition.

No officers were injured in the incident.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.
