One person was killed and three were injured, including a child, when a shooting broke out at a graduation for a California high school the evening of June 3, authorities said.

The shooting happened on the Fairfield High School campus, where a graduation ceremony was being hosted for nearby Sem Yeto High School, also located in Fairfield, California, a city of about 122,000 residents near Sacramento, police said.

Fairfield Police Department responded to a report of a shooting at about 7:15 p.m. local time, Officer Michelle Belyea of the Fairfield Police Department told reporters. The shooting happened in the parking lot of the school, "towards the end" of the ceremony, Belyea said.

The three victims injured by gunfire were ages 11, 20 and 25, Belyea said. They were taken to hospitals for treatment. An 18-year-old died from their injuries. The victims' identities were not shared during a news conference the night of June 3.

Belyea said there wasn't any indication of an active threat to the community, but the investigation was still active. There were no suspects in custody, reported ABC 7.

The Fairfield Police Department said in a statement to USA TODAY on June 4 that it is "working diligently to identify those responsible and ensure the continued safety of our community."

"The Fairfield Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the victims, their families, and all those affected by this tragedy. We understand this incident has caused significant concern within our community," the department said. "As this is an on-going investigation, no additional information is available for release."

Police said there were hundreds of potential witnesses to the shooting at the event attended by about 1,000 people, and it is currently working to interview witnesses. Those with any information should contact the tip line at 707-428-7345 or email juneincidenttips@fairfield.ca.gov, police said.

"Today, our students and their families faced an unimaginable event – one that will leave a lasting impact," said Alma Hernandez, mayor of neighboring city Suisun, California. "As we navigate through this heart-wrenching time, I sincerely hope we can come together to support our students and each other, providing the love and comfort needed for healing."

Fairfield High School and Sem Yeto High School are both part of the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District.
