Old mills in Southern York County and Northern Harford County, Maryland, will be hosting their annual area-wide free open house the weekend of June 13-14.

The mills, which did everything from grinding grain to supplying electricity in the 1800s and early 1900s, are part of a broader celebration sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Society for the Preservation of Old Mills (SPOOM).

The Wallace-Cross Mill in York County will be among the old mills that will have an open house the weekend of June 13-14.

The event will include Eden Mill, Wallace-Cross Mill, Muddy Creek Forks Roller Mills and New Park Wind Engine.

“The ample water sources in this region have been used since before the beginning of this country to supply the power needed to drive the machinery used to process grain into flour,” Todd Eyster, event coordinator, said in a statement. “The water flow from our local streams was also used to power many of our other early industries.”

York County alone has more than 270 documented mill sites. Several local towns in this area also used water power to provide their first source of electrical generation for their community. Additionally, wind was used to provide power needed to grind grain, pump water and other farm uses, Eyster said.
