The researchers are thought of working for society and are low paid. However, in the practice of science and technology, they should work, first of all, for system designers who need their support in designing, developing and implementing the systems under investigation. Unfortunately, this is not a popular case in the area of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), where the support of the system and network researchers for the system and network designers, developers and operators is very limited. Considering that, the team of authors of the book (the team) decided to present the design experiences gained during designing, implementing and operating some line of the computer systems and networks in Poland (the country). The country was selected purposefully: Due to the political reasons, various embargos were imposed on the importation of modern equipment and methods of the computer industry, and the team needed very severely good support from the researchers to fulfil the design and development tasks successfully. However, in the ICT domain, which is a relatively new study and, thus, needing the significant support of science in every country, this support was a minute one in practice. In well developed countries, possessing a surplus of hardware and software components, the need for the support was also observed but could be bypassed through using a surplus of supplies or by learning from the design errors. This bypass was much less available in the country in severe economic conditions and the political conditions of the so-called Cold War. The objective of this book is to present the line of the ICT systems and networks under design and operation from the late 1960s and finishing when this book was written, and to present the requirements for the system and the basic support available from this science. The research aspects under consideration were, first of all, the performance evaluation and, for the systems of the 21st century, the robustness evaluation, with the system designers, implementers and operators being the ideal audience. The changes have created new problems, challenges and opportunities to the discrete event simulation. On manufacturing applications, it is no longer an isolated model but the distributed modeling and simulation along the supply-chain. In order to study the hybrid manufacturing systems, it is critical to have capability to model human performance with different level of skills and under various working conditions. On service applications, the most critical part is to model knowledge workers and their decision making process. The authors believe that discrete event simulation continue to be one of the most effective decision support tools both in global manufacturing and knowledge economy. There are new opportunities for discrete event simulation such as business intelligence systems and simulation-based education. At the same time, there is a strong need to develop a new generation of discrete event simulation software by taking account of changes in application environments.

It was coined as ubiquitous computing by Mark Weiser; D.A. Norman introduced invisible computing, IBM promotes pervasive computing; Sybase calls it mobile embedded computing; and Sun uses the term Post-PC era (Milojicic et al., 2001). Each one perceives differently this new technological region and as a result focuses on a different aspect of it. The prevailing name is ubiquitous computing even if pervasive computing is also used alternately. A common feature of all these diverse approaches though is the center of gravity is moving now from technology to users and services (Milojicic et al., 2001). All promote the current trend through which communication systems and their components are built aiming to offer services based on the analysis of the context of their users and adapt to the specific preferences of each user.

This algorithm is theoretically based on a path loss estimation model that incorporates losses due to walls and floors. This has been confirmed to be the most precise mathematical tool for average signal strength prediction for various frequencies of interest and propagation environments. The total path loss is estimated as a sum of two independent attenuation processes: free space loss and losses due to obstacles. This solution allows for a direct and reliable calculation of the deviation of the fluctuations of the average received signal in an obstacle-dense environment.

Users’ perception of telecommunications network infrastructure QoS provision is critical to successful business management operation of any organization. This thesis establishes the relationship between the user’s perception of QoS and the network QoS parameters. It identifies the causal relationship between these entities such as a user’s network usage behaviour and network parameters. By identifying what is causing what (i.e., is it a peak hour that degrades the network, is it a network setting that causes QoS degradation, etc) it contributes towards the improvement of Information Technology (IT) network management and monitoring policies.
This thesis adopts the subjective research paradigm presenting an enhanced disconfirmation model in Chapter Six that merges a business viewpoint of QoS
provision by conducting the IT survey questionnaire discussed in Chapter Five and a
series of network measurements discussed in Chapter Four.
This thesis utilizes Staffordshire University’s network communications infrastructure (SUNCI), as a testing platform to assess QoS provision in the light of the users’ perception, and compares it with the network management monitoring reports. Since the first implementation of SUNCI, the network management team have practised reactive network monitoring policies and did not have any guidelines on how to assess and manage QoS provision.
This thesis offers a cost effective methodology to assess QoS provision with a minimum effect on SUNCI performance and functionality, as well as providing a literature review and theoretical background on QoS. The thesis assesses SUNCI performance, by examining its current network management and monitoring practices, and conducting real-time network measurements. In order to assess the users’ perception of QoS, this thesis presents the formulation of the IT survey questionnaire, data collection and critical evaluation of its results.
The results suggest the level of users’ satisfaction of SUNCI QoS provision, guidelines and strategies for its future assessments and continuous improvements. The thesis lays ground for further research in promoting developments of engineering techniques in conjunction with a merger between the engineering and business perspectives on the QoS provision. The thesis methodology may be easily adapted to any telecommunications network infrastructure in the world.

As digital heritage covers a very broad spectrum of human knowledge and expression, this paper fo... more As digital heritage covers a very broad spectrum of human knowledge and expression, this paper focuses primarily on the cultural heritage space. A three-box, three-layer strategy framework is proposed for managing innovation in digital heritage. The concept for this framework is derived from the Govindarajan Three-Box strategy framework. The three layers identify the major sets of challenges that a digital heritage ecosystem has to address. These are challenges directly relevant to a large museum, challenges in connecting with the broader ecosystem, and synergies with other ecosystems. Each layer is further divided into five components – technology, infrastructure, capabilities, content, services - for a clearer perception of the key drivers of innovation. A strategy framework for digital heritage should necessarily be open and adaptive yet cognizant of the drivers of innovation. These drivers ultimately determine the type of content and services that may be delivered to visitors and users. In the absence of a national digital heritage strategy, a surrogate framework may be used. A detailed Singapore case study of a surrogate framework, iGOV2010, is included for reference and learning.

Many times cultural specialists will have a unique understanding of the data, relationships, and special sensitivities that should be reflected in the interface and structure of software intended for use in a specific field. When general-purpose software is not able to accurately capture these subtleties of culture, experts and developers can work together to create small, focused solutions. This chapter discusses the special issues presented when developing software for cultural or creative organizations, the development philosophy behind targeted applications, and methods to design ecosystems of small applications that can be combined to meet a wide variety of needs.

RF positioning seems to be an effective approach for implant localization. The two most common positioning data typically used for RF positioning are received signal strength and time of flight of a radio signal between transmitter and receivers (medical implant and network of reference devices with known position). This leads to positioning methods: received signal strength (RSS) and time of arrival (ToA). Both methods are based on trilateration. Used positioning data are very important, but the positioning algorithm which estimates the implant position is important as well. In this paper, the proposal of novel algorithm for trilateration is presented. The proposed algorithm improves the quality of basic trilateration algorithms with the same quality of measured positioning data. It is called Enhanced Positioning Trilateration Algorithm (EPTA). The proposed algorithm can be divided into two phases. The first phase is focused on the selection of the most suitable sensors for position estimation. The goal of the second one lies in the positioning accuracy improving by adaptive algorithm. Finally, we provide performance analysis of the proposed algorithm by computer simulations.
