Some approaches to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) suggest that market goals and the intere... more Some approaches to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) suggest that market goals and the interests of society converge. This essay questions this claim and argues that this convergence is theoretically unstable because CSR shares the neoliberal principle of subjecting stakeholder interests to shareholder interest. In order to support this thesis, I present some areas of concern for CSR where market goals and interests of society diverge: the problem of CSR’s empirical grounds, the issue of public opinion preferences and the risks of free riding mechanisms.
