The VA-ECMO implantation promotes inflammation and ischemia-reperfusion injuries through the VA-ECMO flow, causing digestive mucosa barrier disrupture and inducing translocation of bacterial wall components—Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) with further inflammation and circulatory impairment. During the COVID-19 pandemic, resource allocation became a major problem in globally overwhelmed ICUs. The main goal of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics of the very elderly patients (aged ≥ 80 years) with COVID-19 admitted in Romanian ICUs. The study objectives were to evaluate and determine the factors associated with ICU mortality. Methods. We designed a national, multicentric, observational platform with prospective enrolment. This study included patients aged ≥ 80 years admitted in Romanian ICUs with SARS-CoV-2 infection from March 2020 to December 2021. Results. We included 1666 patients with a median age of 83 years and 78% ICU mortality. Male sex, dyspnoea, lower Glasgow Coma Scale and lower SpO2 at ICU admission, the need for mechanical ventilation (MV), and corticosteroid use were independently associated with mortality. It is also important that we determine whether no such assignments exist, which imply that the propositional formula expressed by the formula is identically FALSE for all possible variable assignments. This later propositional formula is called unsatisfiable, otherwise it is satisfiable. Counting satisfiability is a valuable approach for problems like constraint satisfaction, knowledge compilation, probabilistic reasoning, and computing the permanent of a Boolean matrix. The difficulty with counting satisfiability is that it is as hard as NP-complete problems, but probably much harder. This means that solvers for counting the exact number of solutions may need a large amount of time on large propositional formulas. Face orientation recognition is an important topic in computer vision and pattern recognition. Du... more Face orientation recognition is an important topic in computer vision and pattern recognition. Due to the non-rigid properties of faces, it is computationally expensive and difficult to achieve good recognition accuracy and robustness in face orientation recognition. In this paper, we propose an image mapping technique for face analysis in smart camera networks with a feature extraction and data from the facial feature. We estimate the face orientation angles in all camera views, based on the matched imaged data. Our objective is to obtain a set of facial structures which can work as landmarks for tracking and recognition of facial expressions.

The present paper shows some distinctive features of the compact bone samples in sheep (Ovis aries), goat (Capra hircus) and roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) in respect of secondary osteonal morphometrical data.The method has its potential revealing significant differences, but it also has some limitations as well. The most suitable measurements for species differentiation seem to be the secondary osteonal area and perimeter. The metrical data of maximal and minimal secondary osteonal units seem to less as reliable than the other sets.

In the past decade or so, one of the most impressive map-based software application, the Global Positioning System (GPS), has probably the highest level of interaction with the user. This article describes an innovative technique for designing an avatar-based virtual interactive map for the Lamar University Campus, which will entail the buildings’ exterior as well as their interiors. Many universities provide 2D or 3D maps and even interactive maps. However, these maps do not provide a complete interaction with the user. To the best of our knowledge, this project is the first avatar-based interaction game that allows 100% interaction with the user. Quick Response (QR) codes are getting widely popular as the demand for mobile computing is increa... more Quick Response (QR) codes are getting widely popular as the demand for mobile computing is increasing, too. However, a QR code has apparently a data limit problem when we consider designing color QR codes. Despite having color QR codes decoding from printed material, new problems appear due to different printer’s color depth, paper quality, environmental effect, dust, light glare and other environmental effects. In our model, we proposed a new algorithm to find an area consisting of several bit positions. We have applied an area-based bit detection method based on the percentage of the color level instead of the general binary color bit detection system. This is independent of the printer and the printed substances effect. There is no need for the color correction palette. Based on our experimental results, our findings demonstrate that we can produce a better result without having any image filtering first.

One of the main responsibilities of the software developers is to determine which design pattern fits best to solve a particular problem. Design patterns support the effort of exploring the use of artificial intelligence in better management of software development and maintenance process by providing faster, less costly, smarter and on-time decisions (Pena-Mora & Vadhavkar, 1996). There has been a permanent interest in finding new design patterns, especially in the last two decades. Many new design patterns apply in various areas of computer science, such as software security, software parallelism, large-scale software evolving, artificial intelligence, and more. To the best of our knowledge, the “Obligation Link” and “History Reminder” design patterns are new and can be applied in software development in many areas of computer science including artificial intelligence.

Detecting heart diseases has been a research interest for centuries. Many of these approaches are... more Detecting heart diseases has been a research interest for centuries. Many of these approaches are based on heartbeat analysis using a stethoscope and some of these are digitally analyzed. In an ordinary system, doctors use an acoustic stethoscope to detect any aberration in the heartbeat and predict atypical conditions of the human heart. One major problem is that the frequency range and intensity of the heart sounds are flat as well as the sound may contain noise. Hence, even a cardiac specialist doctor may encounter difficulties to analyze the heart sound perfectly. This paper describes a new methodology to detect heart diseases by examining heart sounds in real-time. We consider the guts sound as our input data. Our methodology uses a deep learning approach to determine whether a patient has any disease or is healthy. To achieve that, we integrated an electronic stethoscope and a software solution known as a heartbeat audio classifier. Our proposed system solution should be able to differentiate normal heartbeats and heart murmurs with a prediction of probable heart problem type in real-time. We believe our approach assists in reducing the cardiac arrest rate.

Bacterial resistance to existent antibiotherapy is a perpetual internationally-recognized problem... more Bacterial resistance to existent antibiotherapy is a perpetual internationally-recognized problem. Year after year, there is a continuous need for novel antibacterial drugs and this research and development efforts recently resulted in few new drugs or combination of drugs proposed for the use into the clinic. This review focuses on the novel US FDA approved antibacterial agents in the last two years (2018-2019). Plazomicin, eravacycline, sarecycline, omadacycline, rifamycin (2018) and imipenem, cilastatin and relebactam combination, pretomanid, lefamulin, cefiderocol (2019) are new therapeutic options. Plazomicin aminoglycoside antibiotic targets Enterobacteriaceae infections, being mainly used for the complicated urinary tract infections. The fully synthetic fluorocycline eravacycline gained approval for the complicated intra-abdominal infections. The tetracycline-derived antibiotic sarecycline might be a useful strategy for the management of non-nodular moderate to severe acne, while the other tetracycline-derived antibiotic approved, omadacycline, may be used for the patients with acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections and community-acquired bacterial pneumonia. The already-known RNA-synthesis suppressor rifamycin is now also approved for noninvasive Escherichia Coli-caused travelers' diarrhea. Two combinatorial strategies were approved for complicated urinary tract infections, complicated intra-abdominal infections (imipenem, cilastatin and relebactam) and lung tuberculosis (pretomanid in combination with bedaquiline and linezolid). Lefamulin is a semisynthetic pleuromutilin antibiotic for community-acquired bacterial pneumonia, while cefiderocol, a cephalosporin antibiotic is the last antibacterial drug approved in 2019, for the use in complicated urinary tract infections. Despite of these new developments, there is an ongoing need and urgency to develop novel antibiotic strategies and drugs to overrun the bacterial resistance to antibiotics.

Urgent need for new antibacterial agents has resulted in significant research efforts, with new molecules proposed for use in clinical practice. However, as highlighted by many groups this process does not have an optimal rhythm and efficacy, to fully combat highly adaptive germs, particularly in the intensive care units. This review focuses on the last three years of novel FDA approved antibacterial agents (2015-2017): ceftazidime/avibactam, obiltoxaximab, bezlotoxumab, delafloxacin, meropenem/vaborbactam, ozenoxacin. Ceftazidime/avibactam and meropenem/ vaborbactam are new players in the field of resistant bacteria treatment. Ceftazidime/avibactam is validated in selected patients with complicated urinary or intra-abdominal infections, hospital and ventilator-associated pneumonia. Meropenem/ vaborbactam gained approval for the cases of complicated urinary tract infections. Other potential indications are under investigation, widened and validated by future studies. Obiltoxaximab is a monoclonal antibody that can be used in the prevention and treatment of inhalational anthrax. Bezlotoxumab monoclonal antibody is an useful and specific tool for the management of recurrent Clostridium difficile infection. Delafloxacin is approved for patients with acute skin or skin structure infections. Despite recent progress, it is imperative to continue the development of new antibiotic drugs and new strategies to counteract resistance to antibiotics.

The abort-and-restart scheme from the Priority-based Functional Reactive Programming (PFRP) parad... more The abort-and-restart scheme from the Priority-based Functional Reactive Programming (PFRP) paradigm eliminates the priority inversion problem. This paper is similar by solving the priority inversion problem using the task order restrictions sets of relations. One of the core problems in real-time systems is finding a feasible schedule for a task set on a multiprocessor platform. While preemptive scheduling has benefited from a large number of significant results, the non-preemptive case has still room for improvement. Despite the fact that the well-known EDF and LLF scheduling techniques are optimal for preemptive uniprocessor platform there is no known optimal scheduling algorithm for non-preemptive task sets on a multi-processor platform. Our paper continues our previous works [1] and [2] by describing the experimental results together with their findings about our alternate scheduling method to the EDF and LLF techniques. Our algorithm, called , is able to schedule all considered nonpreemptive independent tasks on a multi-processor platform, while EDF and LLF fail to sometimes provide a feasible schedule. The experiments indicate no execution time overhead for the cases where all the scheduling algorithms were able to provide the schedule. However, when EDF and LLF fail to provide a schedule, gives the schedule with a 60% execution time overhead.

The abort-and-restart scheme from the Priority-based Functional Reactive Programming (PFRP) parad... more The abort-and-restart scheme from the Priority-based Functional Reactive Programming (PFRP) paradigm eliminates the priority inversion problem. This paper is similar by solving the priority inversion problem using the task order restrictions sets of relations. One of the core problems in real-time systems is finding a feasible schedule for a task set on a multiprocessor platform. While preemptive scheduling has benefited from a large number of significant results, the non-preemptive case has still room for improvement. Despite the fact that the well-known EDF and LLF scheduling techniques are optimal for preemptive uniprocessor platform there is no known optimal scheduling algorithm for non-preemptive task sets on a multi-processor platform. Our paper continues our previous works [1] and [2] by describing the experimental results together with their findings about our alternate scheduling method to the EDF and LLF techniques. Our algorithm, called , is able to schedule all considered nonpreemptive independent tasks on a multi-processor platform, while EDF and LLF fail to sometimes provide a feasible schedule. The experiments indicate no execution time overhead for the cases where all the scheduling algorithms were able to provide the schedule. However, when EDF and LLF fail to provide a schedule, gives the schedule with a 60% execution time overhead.
