Their chemical structures were established by detailed NMR investigations including 1 H and 13 C NMR, HSQC, HMBC and NOESY experiments. In addition, the naphthalene derivatives 1-5 were evaluated for their in vitro antiprotozoal activity against protozoan parasites belonging to the genera Trypanosoma, Leishmania and Plasmodium. Among the tested compounds, naphthaldehyde 1 showed moderate inhibition of the growth of the parasites, T. brucei, T. cruzi, L. donovani with IC 50 values of 19.82, 12.28 and 38.78 lM and displayed cytotoxicity towards rat skeletal myoblasts (L-6 cells) with IC 50 of 174.94 lM, while 2 and 3 were found to be comparatively less active to 1. The dimeric quinones 4 and 5 exhibited good activity against T. brucei and L. donovani with IC 50 of 1.12 and 8.82 lM and 12.94 and 16.66 lM respectively.

Along the way from the first to the second, I worked twice for international Communist organisations, picked up a higher education, worked in the latter, broadened my internationalism from labour and unions to women and feminism ... and all the other alienated and their new(est) social movements. And my (understanding of the) means of emancipatory communication from print to ICT. All accompanied by personal/political (mis)adventures in faraway places with strange sounding names: Gbelce (sounds just like it was), Durban, Manila, Lima, (where my wife still lives) Seoul, Belgrade, Bombay/Mumbai, Porto Alegre, Berlin (first East then West, then ... Berlin), Moscow (1957, 1967, 1992ish, 2008), Prague (dreaming spires, Soviet tanks), The Hague (more than half my life), even Birmingham (UK). Oh, and along the way I abandoned the print for the online publication form, and the priced for the free. Enjoy. And let me know what you thought of it.

Bureaucracy puts us in an iron cage, which limits individual human freedom and potential instead of a "technological utopia" that should set us free. It is the way of the institution, where we do not have a choice anymore. Once capitalism came about, it was like a machine that you were being pulled into without an alternative option; currently, whether we agree or disagree, if you want to survive you need to have a job and you need to make money.
