The underlying purpose of the present work is the simulation, design and analysis of novel high speed electronic devices based on coherent electrons. Electron propagation through periodic lattices of limited size is calculated. Bragg scattering and electron channeling along columns of atoms in the case of large scattering potentials are clearly observed in the simulation. The simulation also clearly demonstrates the transition from weak scattering (Born approximation) to the case of strong scattering. Since the quantum mechanical wave function is determined, the present work also allows the calculation of all quantum mechanical observables, such as current densities, etc. In addition, the present work visualizes quantum transport phenomena. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

These observations are in apparent contradiction with the Lieb-Mattis theorem, which forbids spontaneous spin polarization in one dimension. We show that sufficiently strong interactions between electrons induce deviations from the strictly one-dimensional geometry and indeed give rise to a ferromagnetic ground state in a certain range of electron densities.
