Our case studies range from Belgian Walloon/Belgian French/ Dutch virtual encounters to German/Russian/English chat communication and to Polish/German face-to-face conversations. In these contexts, people’s perceptions are of a fleeting nature, reflecting the dynamics of the b/ order in question. In contact with one another across borders and languages, they challenge their own ways of evaluating products or speech; unconsciously, they accommodate themselves to their interlocutors or show divergence from some of them. Sometimes they start to create shared forms of expression. Bridging economics and linguistics, our research confirms the notion that experiencing betweenness is contiguously related to the liminal space. Either this transitional phenomenon suffers a setback and fades away, or a well-ordered system arises, inevitably accompanied by the emergence of a new order.

Abstract: The research on the history of the discourse tradition Zoo Guide allows to answer the question how the scientific authors managed to form their readers, e.g. to build up a cultivated and refined public over time. Comparing the first guides published in Germany with the most recent ones, we observe a change in the use of vocabulary and grammar. While the texts published in the beginning of the 19th century combine common and every-day words and a simple grammar, the most recent guides show technical sometimes even scientific vocabulary and a complex morphosyntactic structure. This discourse tradition is severely understudied. Since the change of the millennium the discourse tradition Zoo Guide is undergoing a radical change dropping out of use as the services of orientation and information for the visitors of zoological gardens are now solved by the virtual world and modern media.

The previously held contrast between allochthonous and autochthonous people has undergone a change; nowadays, researchers propose that the two qualities form the poles of a continuum, where different grades of being autochthones may be distinguished. As has Canada, the Brazilian government has recently paved the way, conceding the status of autochthony to language communities living for at least three generations in the country. By recognizing cultural, and at the same time linguistic diversity as an important essential part of the process of constructing the new image of being Brazilian, a brasilidade (LESSER, 2015), the unique language use developed by descendents of European migrants, is now regarded as part of the historical and artistic immaterial patrimony in South America.

In a wider sense every conversation may be considered as co-constructed by speakers and their listeners. However, in a narrower sense, semantic, lexical and pragmatic co-construction have to be distinguished. Furthermore, echoing or talking in chorus are co-constructions where participants are voicing speech acts collaboratively. This kind of co-construction is used by professionals and laymen according to their purposes in specific ways. Finally, multimodal communication, namely embodiment , plays an important part in the fine-tuned coordination between the participants performing co-constructions. However, research on this topic is still scarce.

So far, the Brazilian particle aí has usually been considered a local adverb – a deictic element historically related to the Spanish adverb ahí. The aim of this paper is to provide a description of its different usages in contemporary Brazilian Portuguese, which will be deduced from spoken language data. In particular, I shall defend the use of this deictic form as a discourse particle. Finally, I shall compare all different uses of aí. The reader will recognize in this comparison that the uniform written form of aí disguises the different phonetic-prosodic forms of aí when it is used as a spatial deictic or as a discourse particle. Taking these differences into account, it should come as no surprise that listeners in fact have no difficulty understanding the multifaceted uses of ai when engaged in conversation.

Her position towards the speaker determines the choices which may be used to structure the dyad of conversation into several sub-spaces. The research on spoken language use is based on Spanish and polish data (Jungbluth 2005, 2009). Three parts build the 'whole' of the conversation: the acoustically perceivable utterances, the parts not uttered but meant by the speaker and the parts not uttered but interpreted by the hearer (Coseriu 1980). The whole is never the same for everyone involved in conversation, as subjects are different from one another (Humboldt 1836, Wittgenstein 1914). The anchoring of context to the uttered and interactively perceived parts of dialogue does compulsorily show up these differencies.

ABSTRACT: While speakers of the Amerindian language Aymara perceive the future as being behind them (NUÑEZ / SWEETSER 2006), speakers of the Catalan, and Portuguese conceptualize it in front of them. Their use of language, their language- specific construal of time, and their behavioral patterns (BROWN, 2006) reflect not only their acuity of time based on spatial oppositions, but also the unaltered historical tradition of a shared ancient European origin (JUNGBLUTH, 2005). However, there are important differences between the closely related Romance languages concerning how spatial structure is ascribed to time. Starting with the basic bipolar opposition between present and non-present, this paper discusses variation, and especially cognitive variability, while emphasizing shared conceptualizations of time in terms of space. Due to attrition processes of multi-term paradigms, the spatial reference of closely related terms in an etymological sense is no longer consistent between the languages. This inconsistency drifts even further apart when the terms are transferred from the spatial domain to time. As a result, Catalan conceptualizes the future only as non-present, while at least European Spanish differentiates between a closer and a more distant future. A similar tripartite practice of reference is reported by European Portuguese, while Portuguese of Brazil follows the Catalan bipolar pattern. These varying distinctions are the result of culture-specific conceptualizations which reflect the use of a certain language community in focus.

These liminal spaces are characterized by betweenness, and we will make you familiar with this concept and argue that betweenness is a frequent and important concept for social perception, language communication and processes in border regions. We present two case studies situated in the German-Polish border region along the river Oder (Euroregion BrandenburgLubuskie). One case demonstrates
betweenness using a linguistic example rooted in cultural sciences, the other demonstrates betweenness in a value perception example rooted in economics and business sciences. The combination of both cases demonstrates the wide applicability of the betweenness concept and
reflects our interdisciplinary approach on B/Orders.
First, instead of considering the liminal space as a naturally occurring third stage after a first one of durable borders and a second one of permeable boundaries, we shall show that only under particular circumstances betweenness is coming up. More specifically, we consider choices in economic contexts on the one hand and receptive bilingualism on the other observed as part of an everyday behavior among social actors in the border region.
Second, by extending the betweenness concept to the economic idea of reservation prices — which typically explain value perception and economic behavior states — we show that under particular circumstances betweenness-like intermediary states between choice and no choice come up. We argue and show by an empirical example that this betweenness is particularly prominent in border regions, as the different betweenness states in value perceptions on both economically different sides of the border become more salient and even merge for people at the border or in the border region. Consequently, betweenness takes on a relatively larger role, and in some cases now even dominant role, with consequences for individual economic behavior and economic processes along and across the border.
Third, focussing on the individual level the observation on codes can be described as follows: people communicating regularly with each other usually do not recognize the convergence between the two codes, audible for example in form of borrowings from the other’s code/
system. Receptive bilingualism emerges and the new emerging code system between the interlocutors may be observed as a rather dynamic process resulting in a temporary liminal system.
Focusing on those aspects of betweenness which are salient being either unique or obviously more frequent compared to other periods, both approaches show that the liminal stage has to be considered as a transitional phenomenon of short time extension. The transition into a wellordered system is inevitably accompanied by an emergence of a new order.

For example, demonstrative pronouns (DP) are used in Romance Languages to relate the utterance in real space, where the conversation takes place, in temporal space and some other spaces, such as social space, discourse and textual space. I'll focus on Spanish, Catalan and Brazilian
Portuguese, which portray two- and three-term paradigms of DP. Especially in the use of the terms denoting future the difference between the three languages will be clearly displayed.
Without doubt the first term, Spanish este, Catalan aquest, Brazilian Portuguese esse is used to refer to the present. The present may be conceptualized as a rather punctual moment or may be extended into the past or into the future (Spanish: Este año ha habido buena cosecha. This year we have had a good harvest. Este verano me voy a Portugal. This summer I am going to Portugal.). Usually, the second term is used to contrast this present with the non-present which may be further determined within the context of the past or future (Spanish: Yo estaba en la mili ese año. That year I joined the army. If you want to continue your contract after that year, call us). As the data show, Spanish speakers use ese, while Catalan speakers of Barcelona choose aquell in similar contexts. Brazilian Portuguese speakers use aquele only to refer to the past, whereas they extend the use of the present term towards the future. In contrast to these two Iberoromance languages, the third term aquel in Spanish is used to refer to a very far away past or future (Spanish: en aquel tiempo, el pueblo de Itap no era todavía lo
que es hoy. At that time the village of Itap still was not the same as it is today. By then the oil reserves will be exhausted.).The latter use seems to be random and restricted to certain contexts.
To sum up, Catalan and Brazilian speakers contrast the space of discourse built by the speaker and his/her hearers and the non-space using their first and their second term. Transferring this opposition to time, they contrast between the present and the non-present, leaving it up to the context of whether past or future is referred to. Spanish speakers behave quite similarly, but they may differentiate fine grain between a nearer and a further away past and between a nearer and
a further away future. When comparing space and time, the latter becomes less concrete. In a similar way the use of the demonstratives between the three closely related languages analysed here is surprisingly unalike.

Research paper thumbnail of Football Games on TV and Radio. Observing Word Order Phenomena in Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese (and German)

The authentic and homogenous corpus containing transcriptions of football games (Argentina, Spain, Brazil) allows cross-linguistic insights. German football game transcriptions have also been added to these (Jürgens 1999). While verb-second-patterns are dominant in written varieties of all three languages, verb-first-patterns are more likely to be used in discourse. In German these V1 sentences do not form part of the written standard, while in Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese, these patterns are more widespread. The contrast between V2 and V1 patterns is further developed when looking at SVO, DEIKT VO, VSO and VOS patterns. Spanish has the most word order patterns (WOP), while WOPs in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) are fewer and in German the fewest, e.g. word order is fixed to a greater degree. The very frequent case of verbless utterances in all three sub-corpora can also be observed. Interestingly, the patterns vary along the scala between written and spoken varieties in the same way, which may be considered as universal. While V2 patterns are relatively complete and thus optimal for written usage, V1 patterns need more context and VZERO patterns can only be used in cases, where visual and linguistic information is combined into one communicative message. Constraints on the use on these patterns in written and spoken varieties are language specific. What is regular in syntax may be used infrequently and what has to be considered extraregular, looking at syntax, is used extensively by the speakers in discourse, at least when they are commenting on football games in any of the mentioned countries.
