It uses Paul Wong’s theory of positive psychology wave 2 (PP2.0) and explores the concepts of meaning and virtue throughout Frankl's life span. The authors define virtue in terms of appreciation of beauty, gratitude, hope, humour and spirituality, and define meaning based on Paul Wong’s PURE model. They apply Irving Alexander’s primary indicators of psychological salience and W.T. Schultz’s prototypical scenes to analyse Frankl's important life events.
This psychobiography presents an original contribution to theory on three levels: advancing the literature in psychobiography, developing the field of PP2.0, and providing new insights into Frankl’s life. It is a must for psychographers, positive psychologists and people interested in Frankl’s life and theoretical contributions.

Frankl (1905–1997). Frankl was purposively sampled due to his international acclaim as an Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist, who later became famous as a holocaust survivor and the founder of logotherapy. Through his approach of “healing through meaning,” he became the founder of the meaning-centred school of psychotherapy and published many books on existential and humanistic psychology. The study describes the meaning of life and death through two theoretical approaches: the archetypal analysis based on C.G. Jung’s and C.S. Pearson’s work and a terror management approach based on the melancholic existentialist work of Ernest Becker. The methodology of psychobiography is used to conduct the psycho-historical analysis of the interplay of archetypes and death annihilation anxiety throughout Frankl’s lifespan. The article evaluates how archetypes and death anxiety ...

The data collection process is presented, including the sampling procedure and the selection of firstand third-person documents. The process of data analysis and interpretation is described including the content analysis, Alexander's (in Schultz 2005c) indicators of psychological saliency and Schultz's (2005c) keys to identifying "prototypical scenes". Markers of good psychobiographical research are defined and presented. In the end, a chapter summary is provided.

Firstly, it gives a definition and outlines the aims of psychobiography. Secondly, it illuminates the history of its development. Thirdly, it presents the value of psychobiographical case study as well as the contribution of psychobiographical research on the life of Viktor Frankl. The chapter ends with a chapter summary. 2.2 Psychobiography: Definition and Its Aims Psychobiography is defined as "the intensive lifespan study of an individual of historical significance in socio-cultural context using psychological and historiographic research methods and interpreted from established theories of psychology" (Ponterotto 2015, p. 379). Mayer and Kováry (2019) describe psychobiography as a "the systematic application of scientific psychology in the interpretation of life and works of significant people like artists, scientists, philosophers, activists or politicians" [1]. Psychobiography combines "the science of psychology and the art of biography" (Howe 1997, p. 237). The difference between biography and psychology relates to the application of psychological theories in the interpretation of biographical data (Fouché and Van Niekerk 2010). Psychobiography aims at understanding individual lives, uniqueness of people, and how they function (Schultz 2005b). It is less focused on ascertainable details of life-and more on what those details reveal about a person's inner experience such as motives, coping techniques, goals etc. (Schultz 2017). Psychobiographers aims at answering the question about why people think and act as they do (Schultz 2017). It is concerned with the issues of blind spots of people as well as the subjective truth they believe (Mayer and Kováry 2019).

The theories are discussed and illustrated in the light of Viktor E. Frankl's life.
