Tonight the American Idol Top 10 will be performing the songs of Billy Joel. Who better to mentor the finalists than… P. Diddy?

That’s right — the hip hop artist and music mogul just announced on twitter that he’ll be assisting mentor Jimmy Iovine as the kids tackle the songs of the legendary piano man. “Set your DVR!!” Diddy tweeted, “I’m guest mentoring with Jimmy Iovine on American Idol TONIGHT!!”

Diddy has appeared on Idol before, appearing with his R&B/Hip-Hop collective, Diddy Dirty Money, to perform the single “Coming Home” last spring in front of his ex, Jennifer Lopez. The Idol judge dated Didd, a.k.a. Sean Combs, back in the late ’90s when he was still known as Puff Daddy. (The two split up after an incident at a New York City nightclub in 1999 that resulted in a weapons charge for Diddy.)

The finalists met with their mentor on Friday. Even as they left a few tantalizing hints, they kept mum about their secret mentor’s identity on Twitter. Colton Dixon teased, “Had a great mentor session with the one and only……..you’ll find out Wednesday.”

Deandre Brackensick seemed happy with his session: “Just got done with jimmy and the guest mentor :) went well:)) much better song choice than last week aha.”

But was their some friction between Diddy and Phillip Phillips? The Idol finalist tweeted, “Had a weird mentor session today but looking forward to next week.”

You’ll have to tune in tonight to find out exactly what went down between Phillip and P. Diddy in their mentoring session. American Idol airs on FOX at 8 pm.
