David Spade and Chris Farley’s shared time together at Saturday Night Live was key to the duo’s transition to movies, particularly the goofing off they did when they should have actually been working.

Spade appeared on Conan Monday night and reflected on his time spent with Farley, with some input from Conan O’Brien, who was also at the NBC sketch show at the time. Spade details the birth of “Fat Guy in a Little Coat,” a gag in Tommy Boy that got its start in Spade and Farley’s shared office.

“Chris was always bored and I was trying to scribble away and write some crummy sketches, and he’d go, ‘David, turn around,’ ” Spade said.

“And I go, ‘If this is Fat Guy in a Little Coat, it’s not funny anymore. I don’t like it.’ And then he goes, ‘No, it’s not, I’m working on new stuff,'” Spade continued, explaining that he would always turn around, only to find Farley in his jacket.

“That’s why we put it in the movie because we didn’t really have much to do in there,” he joked.
