Terrence Malick's 'Voyage of Time,' 30 years in the making, gets a release date (original) (raw)

Terrence Malick’s films are known for their beautiful photography of nature, whether it’s the sprawling Edenic farms of Days of Heaven or the dinosaur sequence in The Tree of Life. The secretive director’s latest film, Voyage of Time reportedly puts all his skills to test in order to tell the story of the universe, from beginning to end. The project has been rumored for a long time, as Malick worked on it on-and-off in-between his other films, but its release was finally confirmed deep inside this IMAX press release.

Although mostly about IMAX’s first-quarter earnings, the report also mentions that a documentary version of Voyage of Time will be released on Oct. 7 — and with the IMAX release slate pretty clean until Doctor Strange in November, it should get quite a bit of play time.

Malick isn’t known as a documentary filmmaker (his movies more often traffic in fantastic imagery and dreamlike whispers), but Voyage of Time has two separate versions. The documentary will reportedly be narrated by The Tree of Life star Brad Pitt and last 40 minutes. There will also be a feature-length cut narrated by Malick’s Knight of Cups star Cate Blanchett, but release date on that is still unknown.

Wild Bunch describes Voyage of Time as “a celebration of the earth, displaying the whole of time, from the birth of the universe to its final collapse. This film examines all that went to prepare the miracle that stands before us now. Science and spirit, birth and death, the grand cosmos and the minute life systems of our planet — all come together in Malick’s most ambitious film to date.”
