It's only the 13th song to achieve the distinction

Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson’s titanic 2014 single “Uptown Funk” received another impressive distinction Tuesday: The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified the song Diamond, making it the thirteenth song to join the elite category. Established in 1999, the Diamond Award recognizes albums or singles that have sold 10 million or more copies, and outranks the well-known Gold and Platinum designations.

Other Diamond-certified singles include Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ “Thrift Shop,” Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive,” and, most recently, Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe,” which achieved the distinction on Sept. 28. But Mars and Ronson edge other artists with Diamond-certified cuts — including Eminem, Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga, who have two apiece — because “Uptown Funk” went Diamond in record time. The certification comes less than two years after the song’s Nov. 10, 2014, release, narrowly beating out Perry’s “Dark Horse,” which went Diamond on Oct. 29, 2015, just over two years after the release of her album Prism.

Despite their accolades, Mars and Ronson aren’t resting on their laurels. Earlier this month, Mars released “24K Magic,” the single off his upcoming album of the same name, and he appeared on Saturday Night Live over the weekend to debut it and another new cut, “Chunky.” Meanwhile, Ronson worked extensively on Lady Gaga’s new album, Joanne, including its lead single “Perfect Illusion.”
