'Manchester by the Sea' Leads 2016 IFP Gotham Awards Nominations (original) (raw)

Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea heads into the Oscar race with a strong kick from the Gotham Awards. The film, which debuted at Sundance, earned four total nods when the Independent Filmmaker Project’s annual award nominations were announced Thursday morning.

The film, which Amazon Studios acquired for $10 million earlier this year, stars Casey Affleck as a depressed, working-class man tasked with caring for his nephew after the sudden death of his brother. Affleck received a nomination for Best Actor, while the film itself appears in the Best Feature category. Lonergan’s script also received a nomination, as did Lucas Hedges in the Breakthrough Actor category.

Jim Jarmusch’s Paterson also scored three nominations, including Best Feature, Best Screenplay, and Best Actor (Adam Driver), while Kelly Reichardt’s Certain Women earned notices for Best Feature and Breakthrough Actor (Lily Gladstone).

After traveling the fall festival circuit from Telluride to Toronto and New York, Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight received a nomination for Best Feature. It also earned a Special Jury Award for its ensemble cast, which includes Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris, Alex Hibbert, André Holland, Jharrel Jerome, Janelle Monáe, Jaden Piner, Trevante Rhodes, and Ashton Sanders.

In a statement, the nominating committee praised the film, “in which actors at all levels of experience give outstanding performances that speak eloquently to one another both within and across each chapter of the story.”

The 26th Gotham Awards ceremony, honoring the year’s outstanding achievements in independent film, will be held Nov. 28 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. Check out the full list of 2016 IFP Gotham Awards nominations below.
