2023 Golden Globes nominations announced as HFPA attempts comeback (original) (raw)
The 2023 Golden Globes nominations were announced live Monday morning, ahead of the embattled awards body's first live telecast on NBC in nearly two years.
With help from actress Selenis Leyva — who stepped in for George Lopez after he tested positive for COVID — and the comedian's daughter, Mayan Lopez, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association revealed the Golden Globes nominees amid the group's attempted comeback following a racial exclusion scandal.
Among this year's nominees, however, were a range of films and performances, from blockbuster hits to little-seen prestige titles. Though this year's awards season mainstays like Steven Spielberg's The Fabelmans, Michelle Yeoh's Everything Everywhere All at Once, and the Colin Farrell-starring Banshees of Inisherin showed up in a major way, the Globe nominations provided a much-needed boost to performances from Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Dolly de Leon (Triangle of Sadness), Eddie Redmayne (The Good Nurse), and Ana de Armas (Blonde).
On the TV side, Quinta Brunson and her ABC sitcom Abbott Elementary enjoyed continued success after dominating at the Emmys in September, while season 2 of Mike White's celebrated drama The White Lotus also received multiple nominations from the HFPA, including a set of nods for actresses Jennifer Coolidge and Aubrey Plaza.

In February 2021, one week prior to the 78th Golden Globes broadcast, the Los Angeles Times published an exposé that showed there were no Black members among the HFPA's 87-member votership. Following the article's publication, the group faced backlash from a range of film professionals, including Ava DuVernay, Scarlett Johansson, and Tom Cruise, who returned his three Golden Globe statuettes in protest. NBC later declared it wouldn't air the telecast in 2022, while a band of 102 Hollywood publicity firms issued a joint statement pledging not to working with the HFPA until it took action for equity.
Earlier this year, NBC announced that the Globes would return in January, after nearly doubling their voting ranks. Last year, as the HFPA rolled out a scaled-back presentation of its annual awards via a private, non-televised ceremony, industry insiders told EW they weren't optimistic about the organization ever returning to prominence.
"Any nomination from that organization this year is tainted," a prominent publicity head anonymously told EW at the time. Another campaign mastermind added: "You focus on laurels that give pedigree and bring attention in a positive way. Given the conversation right now, [the Globes don't] feel positive. [They don't] feel like forward momentum."

Additionally, Best Actor nominee Brendan Fraser revealed that he would not attend the ceremony despite awards buzz around The Whale, after he alleged that he was sexually assaulted by one of its former presidents, Philip Berk, who has denied the allegation.
Winners will be announced at the 80th Golden Globes ceremony — hosted by comedian and actor Jerrod Carmichael — Tuesday, Jan. 10, on NBC. See the full list of 2023 Golden Globes nominations below.
