Natalie Portman and Ryan Gosling are currently making waves in the awards race for their starring turns in Jackie and La La Land, and their new Texas-based, Terrence Malick-directed romance is poised to make sweet, sweet music when it lands in theaters this spring.
Initially titled Weightless, EW has confirmed the movie, set against the backdrop of the Austin rock ‘n’ roll scene, will hit domestic screens on March 17 via Broad Green Pictures under the new title Song to Song. FilmNation Entertainment is handling international sales.
According to the distributor, the film — Malick’s fifth directorial effort in six uncharacteristically prolific years — is a “modern love story set against the Austin, Texas music scene” that follows “two entangled couples — struggling songwriters Faye (Rooney Mara) and BV [Gosling], and music mogul Cook (Michael Fassbender) and the waitress whom he ensnares [Natalie Portman]” as they chase success through a “landscape of seduction and betrayal.”
High-profile musicians are also set to appear in the film, including Patti Smith, Lykke Li, the Black Lips, Iggy Pop, Florence + the Machine, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and more.
Frequent Malick collaborators, like three-time Oscar-winner Emmanuel Lubezki (The Tree of Life, To the Wonder), production designer Jack Fisk (Knight of Cups, The New World), and costume designer Jacqueline West (The Tree of Life, The New World), worked on the project as well.
