Days after it was reported Warner Bros. might have plans to bring The Matrix franchise back to theaters, the potential new film’s screenwriter, Zac Penn, has offered some thoughts on the project.

“Can’t comment yet except to say that the words ‘reboot’ and ‘remake’ were from an article. Let’s stop responding to inaccurate news,” he wrote on Twitter.

Penn added, “If I were going to recast Keanu Reeves, I would cast Keanu Reeves. … How about just re-release The Matrix? Don’t reboot it, you can’t do better. Do I want to see more stories set in the universe of The Matrix? Yes. Because it’s a brilliant idea that generates great stories. Look at what people are doing with X-Men universe. Between Logan and Legion and Deadpool, does anyone want them to stop? Not me.”

Warner Bros. did not comment on the news of another movie in The Matrix franchise. On Tuesday, The Hollywood Reporter revealed the studio had some plans around the series, with Penn set to write a treatment.

The Wachowski siblings directed the first three films in the Matrix franchise, which shuffled off the Hollywood release radar after the dual 2003 debuts of The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, and Carrie-Anne Moss starred in the original series of films.
