The Netflix action-thriller is based on author Mark Greaney's book series that began with the novel of the same name. Gosling stars as Court Gentry, a legendary killer known as the Gray Man, who's hunted around the world by Lloyd Hansen (Evans), one of Gentry's former cohorts from his days at the CIA. De Armas' role has not yet been revealed.

"The intention is for [_The Gray Man_] to be competitive with any theatrical and the ability to do it with Gosling and Evans is a dream for us," Joe previously said. "The idea is to create a franchise and build out a whole universe, with Ryan at the center of it. We have all committed to the first movie and that’s got to be great to get us to the second movie. These are master assassins and Gosling’s characters gets burned by the CIA and Evans’ character has to hunt him down."

The Gray Man is the first movie the Russo Brothers will have directed after Avengers: Endgame, which starred Evans. They also previously directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Infinity War.

De Armas got her start in Spanish film and TV before her breakout role in Knives Out as nurse Marta Cabrera, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination for best actress in a comedy or musical. She's also had film roles in Blade Runner 2049, The Night Clerk, Sergio, and War Dogs.
