Bradley Cooper has a knack for bringing to life musical geniuses.

After making his directorial debut with A Star Is Born, in which he also portrayed doomed rocker Jackson Maine, Cooper is returning to do double duty as star and director with Maestro, a biopic about the legendary composer Leonard Bernstein.

On Monday, Netflix dropped the first images of Cooper on set and as Bernstein in the film. The photos feature Cooper as a young Bernstein alongside Carey Mulligan as Bernstein's wife, Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein.

They also showcase Cooper directing while still in costume as Bernstein.

But perhaps the most striking of the images are the two that feature Cooper as an elderly Bernstein, still conducting and honing his craft.

Maestro will mark Cooper's first directorial effort since A Star Is Born, and features a script co-written by Cooper and Josh Singer (Spotlight).

It follows Leonard (the mastermind behind the music from West Side Story, Peter Pan, and more) and Felicia's complex love story across three decades, beginning with their first meeting at a party in 1946 through two engagements and three children — Jamie, Alexander, and Nina — over 25 years of marriage.

The film also stars Maya Hawke and Matt Bomer.

It's being produced by Cooper, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Bradley Cooper, Fred Berner, Amy Durning, and two Hollywood luminaries — Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg.

A release date for Maestro has yet to be announced.
