Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis are making the Yuletide gay — literally — in the first trailer for their upcoming holiday rom-com Happiest Season.
The preview teases writer-director Clea DuVall's story following a young lesbian, Abby (Stewart) and Harper (Davis), who travel to the latter's conservative family home for the holidays. All is well until Harper tells Abby she's yet to come out to her eccentric parents: Homemaker Tipper (Mary Steenburgen) and her no-nonsense politician husband, Ted (Victor Garber).
Holiday hijinks ensue on top of Abby's plight, which includes hiding her real identity from the rest of Harper's probing family (Alison Brie, Mary Holland) while her flamboyant friend John (Dan Levy) keeps tabs on the escalating chaos from afar.
"This is why I avoid Christmas. It brings out the worst in everything," Abby says in the clip, though John later reassures her: "Everybody's story is different. Just because Harper isn't ready doesn't mean she doesn't love you."
Speaking to EW earlier this year, DuVall said she wrote the story from her "own place of truth" as a queer woman, which the cast felt added authenticity to the story.
"I grew up watching and loving conventional movies like this. Seeing [marginalized] people loving each other in the middle of something that's so standardized was really exhilarating and freeing," Stewart continued. "There's a lack of confusion and generalization Clea brings [as a queer woman]. I want people to see that two girls in love is just so fun."
Happiest Season begins streaming Nov. 25 on Hulu. Watch the first trailer above and be sure to read EW's full preview.
