Meet Hollywood's 6 power couples nominated for Oscars this year (original) (raw)
How does that old saying go? The couple that makes movies together stays together.
The 96th Academy Awards will be Hollywood’s biggest date night for half a dozen couples who will walk the red carpet and wait with bated breath to maybe win an Oscar. That’s right, six couples have secured nominations for the upcoming awards show.
A few of them might need to call in a sitter so they can be free to have each other’s backs in the Dolby Theater on March 10.

Barbie co-writers Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach share a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, which marks the fourth Oscar nod for both filmmakers and the first one they’ve earned together. Aww.
They’ve certainly come a long way, given Baumbach was less than thrilled when the couple first entertained the idea of penning a Barbie movie. “I thought it was a terrible idea and Greta signed me up for it,” he said during a 2023 Q&A. “I was just like, ‘I don’t see how this is going to be good at all.'”
Overall, Barbie earned eight nominations, including a nod for Best Picture. Needless to say, it’s a good thing the couple stayed attached to the project.
This gives Gerwig and Baumbach yet another milestone to celebrate: The pair, who first met when the actress was cast in his 2010 movie Greenberg, married earlier this year, opting for a New York City Hall ceremony.

There’s more than one Barbie couple expected to walk the Oscars red carpet. The star of the film herself, Margot Robbie, co-founded her production company with her husband and producing partner, Tom Ackerley. Together, the duo are competing for Best Picture with fellow producers David Heyman and Robbie Brenner.
This marks a relationship first for Robbie and Ackerley, who tied the knot in 2016. While Robbie didn’t receive a nod in the Best Leading Actress category, her producing role still earned her third-ever Oscar nomination.

The Barbenheimer face-off continues, even in the couple space. Oppenheimer is competing for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay, meaning both Barbie couples have stiff competition from director and producer duo, Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas.
Thomas has served as the producer on every feature film directed by her husband, so this is not their first time competing for Best Picture — though they have yet to land a win. Thus far, Oppenheimer has enjoyed awards season success, including numerous wins at the Golden Globes and Critic’s Choice Awards. When the film won its Globe for Best Picture, Thomas made sure to note her joy at seeing Nolan recognized for his work.
"I'm so pleased that Chris has been acknowledged, because I think what he does is unlike anything anyone else is doing," Thomas said, with Nolan and the cast standing behind her. "Chris sort of brings the best out of people by being the very best himself."
The couple, who met in college, married in 1997 and share four children.

Elsewhere, Justine Triet and Arthur Harari are up for Best Original Screenplay for Anatomy of a Fall, their legal thriller about a woman suspected of murdering her husband, with only their blind son as a sole witness.
Triet is also competing for Best Director and the film is up for Best Film Editing, Best Actress, and Best Picture. The French couple, who share two kids, have not previously been nominated but have frequently worked together, including on the script for 2019’s Sibyl.

Samy Burch and Alex Mechanik, who married last year, earned May December its sole Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. The film stars Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman, and Riverdale breakout Charles Melton. The couple wrote the story together, though it was Burch who penned the final screenplay, loosely inspired by the relationship between sixth-grade teacher Mary Kay Letourneau and her then-student Vili Fualaau.

Jerusha Hess and Jared Hess, the husband and wife filmmakers who previously co-wrote Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, are the final competing couple. Together, they helmed Ninety-Five Senses, an ode to the body’s five senses that’s up for Best Animated Short Film.
The 96th Academy Awards will air on Sunday, March 10, at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT on ABC. See the full list of 2024 Oscar nominations.
