No joke, no prank: Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker trailer is now online (above).

The first teaser trailer for director Todd Phillips’ origin story of the Clown Prince of Crime was released Wednesday morning after making its debut at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

Set to Jimmy Durante’s “Smile,” the footage introduces Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck as a dejected man stumbling through the streets of Gotham, trying to find respectable work as a clown (and getting beat up) and then spirals into becoming a manic criminal, at one point letting loose with the DC villain’s trademark deranged laugh as he sits inside a comedy club. Zazie Beetz, Robert De Niro, Marc Maron, and Shea Wigham also star.

Phillips has described the film as a standalone origin story and a tragedy, a project that will live apart from the newly upbeat vibe of DC’s Extended Universe fronted by titles like Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and the soon-to-be-released Shazam! Fans at CinemaCon opined that the film looked like DC’s darkest movie yet.

The project also released a new poster on Tuesday:

Warner Bros. Pictures
