Fans of independent cinema hailed the announcement that Gregg Araki, the visionary filmmaker behind cult classics like The Doom Generation and Totally F‑‑‑ed Up, would be making the jump to television. And the logline for Araki's TV series, Now Apocalypse, sounded full of the director's trademark kaleidoscopic, sexy-druggy surrealism. The show follows Ulysses (Avan Jogia), a man struggling through various misadventures in contemporary Los Angeles: dating apps, Med Men-era weed consumption, premonitions that the world is ending. Ulysses and his friends are pursuing love, sex, and fame, and he begins to suspect there's a conspiracy swirling around him. So, the usual millennial experience circa 2019.
Now Apocalypse will air its series premiere Sunday, March 10, at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the long-awaited season 2 premiere of American Gods. (It's executive-produced by Gregory Jacobs and Steven Soderbergh; Soderbergh previously worked with Starz the fascinating small-screen adaptation of The Girlfriend Experience.) Araki directed the complete 10-episode first season of Now Apocalypse, co-writing with Karley Sciortino, the Vogue.com sex columnist who is also the creator and host of Viceland's Slutever.
