Cape Town Police seize fake goods worth R98m in Bellville crackdown (original) (raw)

Cape Town police have dealt a major blow to the illicit trade in counterfeit goods, seizing fake merchandise worth an estimated R98 million in Bellville.

The seizure followed an operation during which police inspected several shops suspected of selling counterfeit products.

Officers confiscated a large quantity of fake branded goods, including clothing, running shoes, and sneakers.

Bellville has become a key hotspot for law enforcement operations targeting illicit trade.

In March this year, authorities seized counterfeit goods worth more than R117 million in a similar crackdown.

Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg said no arrests had been made yet. “These operations are aimed at combating the counterfeit and illicit goods trade in the Western Cape and to protect consumers and legitimate businesses who are affected by the trade. The circumstances surrounding this case are under investigation and those responsible for the illicit trade are pursued, and some are questioned.”
