_3:20 pm_[morganminstrel] It's that most wonderful time of the year.... Yes, it's that time...the weekend that is most special to a certain group of people, ex-Hamsters and Excaliburites all--it's Ravenloft weekend! What is Ravenloft, I hear you cry. Well, (in this context, not in its official definition) it's essentially a tournament-style role playing game that a bunch of us started at Hampshire college in 1991. I wrote about those beginnings here. And this year is the 17th consecutive year that we have had a quorum of the circle of friends who started the thing (as well as many who joined in later on) get together to spend a night (and, these days, most of a day as well--we're old and can't stay up as late!) fighting the forces of darkness. (Not sure whether I'm referring to the game masters or the dice here.) And, for many of us, getting our butts handed to us by said forces. Of course, we haven't always been using a D&D setting each year. We did the first, but we've varied (this year, for example, everyone will be kung fu fighting...and it might get a little bit frightning)....can anyone help reconstruct the general settings over the years? (We can start in the comments and I can post a follow-up later...) Also, I'm of the belief that the only person who can say they've taken part in every durn one, each year--or at least one per year in the times when we had competing games--is ronelyn. Am I wrong in this?Ravenloft does survive at Hampshire as an event sponsored by what must be Fourth Wave (at least) Excalibur called "DeathFest," which name probably captures the spirit of the original tourney quite well. ("Have you killed any characters yet? Geeze, we have too many for the final battle!") And it's great to know an Excal tourney still goes on.But Ravenloft? That's ours. Has been for seventeen years now. And I, for one, cannot wait until Saturday! Current Mood: excited (4 Comments |Comment on this)

_11:12 pm_[morganminstrel] Starting a history? So, I guess it's going to take some specific requests to get a history post started here. As far as I know, asim is the oldest member here. (Not meaning to call you old, of course...) He's the person who could tell us something about the pre-90s club. So, I hereby request that asim either comment or start a new post. Then some of the rest of us could take up the story. Think about how nice it'd be to have a history of Excalibur ready for the 20th anniversary.....asim? Anybody? _9:47 pm_[folzgold] Hi! I'm Jacob, one of the three current signers of Excalibur.I have recently realized that Excalibur will be celebrating 20 years probably in Fall 2006. We'll ask you to contact all your friends and have them contact their friends from Hampshire, and try to hold a big event. Now would be the time to start thinking of what that event would be, so if you have any ideas for the 20th anniversary, please do tell us! (1 Comment |Comment on this)

_11:47 am_[morganminstrel] All right, let's get started! Well, we have our first current member, which means all of our members no longer know each other. ;-) I wanted to use this thread for folks to introduce themselves in the comments. In an e-mail to me, folzgold also mentions that Excalibur's 20th anniversary is coming up (does 1986 sound right to you, asim?), and that they don't know how it will be commemorated. So if anyone has a suggestion for the celebration, why not share that too?I'll start. As you all know by now, I'm morganminstrelF90 and I was officially in Excalibur from its resurrection in 1991ish. I was involved in running the first Ravenloft tournament (who came up with that idea? strahd72?), now called "Deathmatch," starting the tradition of showing movies, etc. I was also one of the crazy people who thought Hampshire was a good place to hold a convention. We tried it twice (Convocation--now OurCon--in 1992 and the first 5Con in 1993) and....well, at least 5Con was fun! (spoomeister can tell stories, oh the stories we can tell...) I left Hampshire in 1993, never to return, though I kicked around the area for awhile before finally landing in the Seattle area. (Otherwise known as early 90s Excalibur West.) Married a woman I met one of the years I went back as a guest for 5Con (so founding it was good for something, right?) and finally got my BA (after 15 years) this year. As for the 20th anniversary, I'd suggest a reunion, but I don't know who'd actually be able to come. So I'll say a BIG party with a huge game (or a bunch of them) going on. And it needs to happen on both coasts. :-)So, that's me. Now it's everyone else's turn. (20 Comments |Comment on this)

_3:36 pm_[morganminstrel] Welcome! Hi everyone! My name is morganminstrel and I'm a Hampshire alum--F90, to be specific. I was at the forefront of "Excalibur, phase two," otherwise known as "the first version of the club that actually did anything." I'm hoping that between the lot of us, we'll be able to cobble together a history of the club from the late 80s through the mid 90s....and I'm also hoping any later members will be able to help us fill in the gaps between then and today. So why did I do this, you ask? Not a bad question. Well, as the userinfo I wrote says, I'm hoping this can become a forum for members and alums to share stories, information*, etc. and make and keep connections between we old fogeys and you new young'ins. Back when I was at Camp Hamp, the college President (Greg Prince) kept going on and on and on about how we needed to "build traditions" at Hampshire. We used to joke that Hamp traditions lasted about five years and were then forgotten. Imagine my delight, then, when I discovered that the Hallow'een RPG tournament we started in the Fall of 1991 still gets played! (Admittedly, under a different name.) It made me think about how Excalibur must be one of the oldest student groups on campus, yet members today have no contact with alums. Other college SF clubs (Stoneybrook's "SF Forum" being a big example) have traditions and contacts that go back decades...so, why not Excalibur? So, here I am. And, if I'm lucky, here we are! Let's talk about Excalibur, shall we?*=not general current Excal announcements, like movie showings and such. You current members have a mailing list for that, right?P.S. I'm a lowly unpaid user, who doesn't use icons or anything like that. If anyone has icons they want to contribute or suggestions for layout or whatnot, let me know!
