Later in the book there will be a closer discussion of what it might mean to share sovereignty at the global level. Before that is done, however, it will be useful to focus upon global bodies that already exist and upon regional unions apart from the EU that have grown in importance in recent years. However, it is important to recognise that there are other significant regional organisations besides the European Union, some of which have recently grown in importance. It is therefore appropriate to consider how far they, as much as their European counterpart, might be the basis for a Global Union. How, if at all, can the European Union be differentiated from unions or partnerships between nations that have grown up in other parts of the world, such as the African Union, ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and MERCOSUR (the South American Common Market).
