ExRx.net : ADA Statement (original) (raw)
ExRx.net is committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of technology or ability. We are actively working to increase the accessibility and usability of our website.
This site has been built using code compliant with W3C standards for HTML and CSS. The site displays correctly in current browsers and using standards compliant HTML/CSS code means any future browsers will also display it correctly.
For many years, we have provided a language translation tool allowing the greatest number of people from around the globe to translate our content into over 40 different languages.
Although US law only requires only reasonable access for websites, particularly for sites with a physical store nexus, no specific guidelines have been established, with the exception of government related sites.
Although ExRx.net does not have a physical store nexus, nor do we have any contract with the government, we still strive to conform to level A of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG). These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible for people with disabilities. Conformance with these guidelines is intended to make the web more user friendly for all people.
For example, the visually impared users users can use a keyboard to navigate throughout the ExRx.net while making use of screen readers and/or specific browser settings. From the beginning, we’ve included Alt Tags for images and more recently we’ve included Embedded ARIA labels for other page elements in effort to further assist the visually impared. Although our exercise demonstration videos contained with our exercise library do not have audio, all exercise demonstration videos merely represent an alternative to the text instructions which follow on the same page.
Although ExRx.net strives to provide practical accessibility and usability, it is not always possible or practical to do so in all areas of the website (eg; within iframes). Conversely, we believe that strict conformity to certain standards can actually decrease over all user experience and usability of ExRx.net in certain cases.
Read more about our experience with a predatory litigation firm claiming to represent blind consumers seeking to purchase store items such as exercise clip art: This resulted in changes to ExRx.net which unfortunately and ironically decreased user accessibility particularly for our blind users in effort to avoid a frivolous lawsuit. See Our Experience with a ADA Predatory Litigation.
We continue to seek out solutions that will bring all areas of the site up to the same level of overall web accessibility. In the meantime should you experience any difficulty in accessing the ExRx.net website, please contact ExRx.net at feedback[at]exrx[dot]net.
