The literature showed that increased brain oxidative stress affects cardiovascular regulation. However, no previous study investigated the involvement of brain oxidative stress in animals exposed to cigarette and its relationship with cardiovascular regulation. We aimed to evaluate the effects of central catalase inhibition on baroreflex and cardiovascular responses in rats exposed to sidestream cigarette smoke (SSCS). Methods: We evaluated males Wistar rats (320-370 g), which were implanted with a stainless steel guide cannula into the fourth cerebral ventricle (4th V). Femoral artery and vein were cannulated for mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR) measurement and drug infusion, respectively. Rats were exposed to SSCS during three weeks, 180 minutes, 5 days/week (CO: 100-300 ppm). Baroreflex was tested with a pressor dose of phenylephrine (PHE, 8 μg/kg, bolus) to induce bradycardic reflex and a depressor dose of sodium nitroprusside (SNP, 50 μg/kg, bolus) to induce tachycardic reflex. Cardiovascular responses were evaluated before, 5, 15, 30 and 60 minutes after 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (ATZ, catalase inhibitor, 0.001 g/100 μL) injection into the 4th V. Results: Central catalase inhibition increased basal HR in the control group during the first 5 minutes. SSCS exposure increased basal HR and attenuated bradycardic peak during the first 15 minutes. Conclusion: We suggest that SSCS exposure affects cardiovascular regulation through its influence on catalase activity.

It is a serious public health problem. The current treatments comple-mentary to the optimized clinical treatment, such as cardiomyo-plasty, heart transplantation, and different types of pacemakers, along with mechanical devices of ventricular support have not been established as standard procedures. Each of them has its own disadvantages, creating a field for study and application of alternative techniques. Of the latter, transplantation of exogenous stem cells to the impaired myocardium, aiming at improving cardiac performance, a process called cell cardiomyoplasty, seems to have a promising future 1-3. Stem cells constitute a population of immature tissue precursor cells capable of self-renewal and production or replacement of cells of many tissues 4. Different methods of treatment with stem cells

This is why we aimed at investigating if IMT is associated with alterations in the autonomic modulation of heart rate variability (HRV). Methods: This was a cross-sectional study with 30 subjects. The atherosclerotic artery IMT was determined by B-mode and duplex ultrasonography. HRV was evaluated through linear (low frequency [LF, ms2], high frequency [HF, ms2], standard deviation (SD) of normal R-R wave intervals [SDNN], square root of the mean of the sum of the squares of differences between adjacent normal R wave intervals [RMSSD]) and nonlinear Poincare analysis (SD of the points perpendicular to the line-of-identity [SD1, ms]; SD along the line-of-identity [SD2, ms]). Results: A significant negative linear correlation was identified between the IMT of common carotid artery and the HRV indexes th...

Regarding the heart, cardiac conditions are determined by the electrocardiogram, that is a noninvasive medical procedure. In this work, we propose autoregressive process in a mathematical model based on coupled differential equations in order to obtain the tachograms and the electrocardiogram signals of young adults with normal heartbeats. Our results are compared with experimental tachogram by means of Poincaré plot and dentrended fluctuation analysis. We verify that the results from the model with autoregressive process show good agreement with experimental measures from tachogram generated by electrical activity of the heartbeat. With the tachogram we build the electrocardiogram by means of coupled differential equations.
