He didn't know what possessed him to do it.
"Here! This dress is really pretty! Mama said it was East City style too, so it should work!" Sarah handed the dress over to Rowen, who sighed and solemnly pulled it over his head. He turned to the full length mirror hung to the wall in front of him and stared at his reflection.
"Something's missing," he said after a moment or two and Sarah's head popped from behind his reflection's shoulder.
"Well, I have some gloves...and I can do your hair!" The younger girl pulled a chair over to the mirror and made the 15 year old sit down. She than began to pull various clips and combs from her mother's dresser before returning to her cousin, brush poised and ready for attack.
Rowan pulled on the white satin gloves, which were a stark contrast to the black dress and resumed staring at his reflection as Sarah started pulling back his hair.
"What color lipstick do you want?"
The question disturbed the teen from his train of thought. "Excuse me...what?"
"Lipstick! If you're doing all this, you might as well go all the way. Oh! I know! There's a shade of pink in the dresser that would look absolutely gorgeous!"
Rowan groaned, but accepted the small metal tube when it was presented to him. He uncapped the top and rolled up the stick, leaning forward in the chair to get a better look at himself as he carefully applied the pigment.
He only finished his bottom lip when the door opened.
"Rowan, I think we've outstayed our welcome. It's time to go-" Edward Elric stared at his son and neice, as they stared back at him wide-eyed. Sarah recovered first and cheerfully waved at her uncle. Rowan's first instinct was the pull the tube of lipstick behind his back as quick as he could and chuckle nervously, hoping that his father didn't see.
Of course, the lipstick was a moot point considering the fact that he was wearing a dress and gloves, with his hair done up like some debutant.
Edward slowly backed out of the room, turned on his heel and marched down the stairs. "WINRY!"
~~~
"Ed, I would expect my daughter to mess with my dresser, not YOUR son."
"Him mess with- Sarah probably put him up to it!"
"Now, now, I'm sure there's a good explanation for-"
"Sarah!"
"Now Brother, you have-
"Hey! She wasn't the one dressed for a night on the town!"
"Winry-"
"Get the girl a doll so she'll stop using my son!"
"...ugh..."
Rowan sat out on the front porch of his aunt and uncle's house, listening to the argument inside. After his dad had walked in on he and Sarah, they changed and cleaned up as fast as they could so as to not incur any more parental wrath. Then it was best to split up; Sarah fled to her room, and Rowan snuck out of the house.
They really hadn't meant to do so much harm or cause so much commotion. And it was really Rowan's fault in the beginning. He had been the curious one. Sarah had just jumped in and went along with it like she always had. What was he going to say when his father demanded an explanation? What could he say?
He couldn't tell him he was just curious. Curious about his mother, and what she might have looked like. Curious to see that one piece missing from his life. Surely his father couldn't blame him too much for simply wondering, yes?
But he'd seen the looks in his father's eyes; seen the hurt pass there before disappearing and he knew. He knew he couldn't bring it up.
The guilt he'd feel would be too much to deal with.
