Movie: Half Lives
IMDB: It tells the story of Luke Marikos. His elegantly constructed bunker has acted as a haven for his small group of survivors, but living behind the sealed doors for so long can drive anyone mad. He was the most compelling part of Dollhouse, and great in Cabin in the Woods, but can Fran Kranz carry a movie on his surprisingly toned shoulders? The answer may surprise you! [more inside]

Book: Shadows of Self (Mistborn #5, Wax & Wayne #2)
When family obligations forced Waxillium Ladrian to forsake the frontier lands and return to the metropolis of his birth to take his place as head of a noble House, he little imagined that the crime-fighting skills acquired during twenty years in the dusty plains would be just as applicable in the big city. He soon learned that there too, just being a talented Twinborn — one who can use both Allomancy and Feruchemy, the dominant magical modes on Scadrial — would not suffice. Movie: The Red and the White
Similar to Miklós Jancsó's The Round Up from the year before, this was another harrowing war drama, equally brutal, senseless - and beautiful. It sees the battles between the Bolsheviks and the White Army of 1917 as a cruel 'Hunger Games' where both sides kill their enemies and supporters without any regards or reservations. The upper hand changes from scene to scene, and the remorseless execution of everybody on the screen is equally pointless. There are no good guys here; they are all exactly the same. [more inside]

Movie: The Distinguished Citizen
An insightful black-comedy by an Argentinian filmmaker couple, Gastón Duprat & Mariano Cohn. It's a prestige piece about a successful Nobel-prize novelist, who accepts an invitation from the tiny, provincial town where he was born, and which he left 40 years earlier and never visited since. He's been living in Europe, became an elitist and world-wide literary celebrity, but all his books are based on characters from the mythical "Macondo" of his childhood. A fantastic premise, very well made. The ingenious plot twists are like the stories he write, and his uncomfortable adventures in this sleepy, forgotten place are hilarious. The trailer.
