How it all started:
So asugar said, "By the way, I totally want to start a fic bookclub. I'd want to read all fandoms and would prefer mostly gen and het. But I'm open to reading anything if it's good. I miss talking about the fic I read. I really have to prioritize what I read so I'd like whatever it is to be quality stuff, if you know what I mean. Longer than 5K and not fluffy or cliche or valueless PWP.” And gelbes_gilatier said, “That sounds great.”

Welcome to the FanFic BookClub. We appreciate your visit and hope you’ll join us for a chat.

How we work: It's pretty simple. Like any other book club we make suggestions for the next thing we’ll read, choose something, read it and then come back and discuss what we liked, what we didn’t and what we think it meant. We just want to enjoy some reasonable, thoughtful, sometimes silly discussions about the stories we read and the ideas therein. The longer, the better.

Also just like any other book club, we’ve come together as a group of readers with somewhat similar interests. While we will have special themed rounds where we read epics, series, shorter stories or other variations, what we generally read what could be termed as fanfic with literary merit, specifically stories with a word count of roughly five thousand words or longer.

We prefer gen and het but we’re friendly to any interesting story. As far as genre, anything goes except the hopelessly clichéd, torture porn, fluff or valueless PWP.

We define valueless PWP the same way the U.S. Supreme Court does pornography, that which appeals SOLELY to the prurient interest. We like porn as much as the next person but it needs to have some artistic value to be chosen.

Please feel free to post any suggestions for our next read to the sticky at the top of the comm. The moderators will choose the next story using the FanFic BookClub Electoral College ™, whose delegates have been selected by our patented algorithm that factors in what’s most recently been read such as fandom, genre, season, our mood, and most importantly, the popular vote. We also run polls as to what the next themed round will be.

How often what we’re reading changes depends on our members. Once we select and post the next read, the discussion starts and will continue until the group is ready to move on.

Feel free to post to any discussion, no matter how old. We’re a chatty bunch and will usually be happy to jump back into it.

As far as rules go, we’re a pretty laid-back group and hope to not need many. It shouldn’t need to be said but NO shipwars, flaming or drama, please. As my mother would say, “Don’t make me pull this car over and separate you.”

Follow the golden rule of fandom: feed the author. That means that any criticisms offered here of a story should be constructive and not personal attacks on the author. Authors please keep the same in mind and don’t take any constructive criticisms personally.
