The Fan Fic Pen (original) (raw)

I hope you guys can help me. I've been tearing my hair out over this and my fic has stalled as a result.

I'm working on a novel-length story. It focuses on one boy as he finds a new family and learns to become a hero.

There is a lot of training involved, and I'd like to show his physical growth, the expansion of his knowledge base, and how he becomes closer to his family through a series of brief scenes. Most of these scenes will be no more than a few paragraphs. My problem is that there are a lot of them. Two to four chapters worth, depending on what I decide to cut. (And these aren't short chapters either.) How do I handle this?

Right now, I'm leaning towards ending the previous chapter with a lead-in, something like: "Let's get started on your training." Then, in the next few chapters, I'll simply arrange the scenes in the proper order, dividing them up with physical scene dividers (- - - - -) and leaving out any written segues.

My question is, will this be jarring to the reader? I'm worried that it will be almost like a series of drabbles or flash fic in the middle of a novel, although they'll certainly follow a pattern and theme.

Would you handle this differently? If so, then how?

Thank you in advance for your advice.
