_7:17 pm_[luna_kitsu_blu] | Hey, all! I have a question for anyone willing to answer it. Its kinda hard one, cuz I've already asked other friends that write it and I have yet to really get an answer. See, for my story--the normal elves vs. humans bit--my main character is rather difficult. He's complicated and HAS to be that way for the story to work. He doesn't talk hardly at all--he's not called 'Thirteen-words-and-a-snort Kip' for nothing--and doesn't find humor in anything. The fact he doesn't think anything is funny is what really kills my style, but moving on. In a nutshell, Kip's boring. But he's the main character. He HAS to be. There's no way around it. Him being the focus is something I cannot change. And the fact he's boring CANNOT change either. This, maybe by itself would just be hard, but I have two secondary characters that pop up right from the start. They are what's making this nigh impossible. And they are very, very fun-loving, fan service-y characters. They will easily steal the show, and that's fine cuz that's what I created them for. But still, Kip needs to be who the readers know from pretty soon on is the main character. He might be boring, but he's the important one.I don't know how to accomplish this. I'm NOT that good of a writer yet. I'm afraid of first person because Kip is so darn dry, he'd make the whole thing boring and scenes I want to be funny wouldn't be to him. At the same time, if this is in third, my secondaries are going to be the center of attention hands down.Any advice whatsoever at this point is GREATLY appreciated. Heck, I'll give anyone who does a cookie. PS. Before anyone suggests "Get to know him better" by means of more thought put into his character or a character sheet, that's not my problem. Don't get me wrong, that is a good suggestion, its just not what I'm having trouble with. I KNOW about Kip, to the point I'm probably being anal. My issue is really about how to write the story. _3:01 pm_[keators] | Hey muffins. ^_^I’ve been writing snippets now; my novel is currently paused (if you happened to peruse that…). So I’ve more or less turned my journal into just a writing journal, not just for my novel. I’d love it if you wanted to drop by and tell me what you think of my work. ^_^. I’d love it if you tell me what works, and what I need to improve on.Here’s a linky to my writing journal. XoRach. (Comment on this) |

_8:21 pm_[keators] | Heya, I’m working on a novella for a writing class. I’ve got a draft here, however, I’m not sure if it is coherent. If anyone had the time (or inclination!), I’d love it if you could look it over and tell me what you think, or what I need to work on! I’m worried a lot of it doesn’t make sense! Thanks! Rach. (p.s. if this post isn’t appropriate mods, please delete! =) )( Read more...Collapse ) Thanks! =) -Rach. (Comment on this) |

_5:01 pm_[congofriend] | Hi, I'm Jeanne and I have just joined your group. By way of introduction, my favorite fantasy author if Poul Anderson, my favorite book of his is "Hrolf Kraki's Saga" tied with "The Broken Sword," and a random thing about myself is that I have the best, supportive husband that an aspiring writer could ask for. I am 41 years old with 1 child and a granddaughter, and I have been writing since I was in my early twenties.I have worked with traditional publishers to produce four separate works, but more recently I have self-published my newest fantasy work "The Sacrifice of Riena." For those interested, you can preview the first chapter and a half free at http://www.lulu.com/content/342312.While it is still my hope to find a traditional publisher for this work, it was nice to be able to finally get it out of my head and make it available to family and friends after working on it for more than eight years.Best wishes to everyone for a productive writing career,Jeanne (Comment on this) |

_11:40 pm_[lindyn] | ...because you just don't have enough introductions Merry Met and Blessed Be. I'm (obviously) a new member of this inspiring and constructive community. Like many of you, I've been immersed in my world and its stories for years. I've worked out the logistics of Lerilyan, so now I can begin the real work--obliging the novels in my head that so badly want to be written. This fall, I'll embark on a teacher-sponsored independant study in creative writing. It's my way of creating sacred space in my school schedule for my art. I look forward to reading and posting in this community. Being very possesive of my ideas, I probably won't post my work in great part or whole, but I will post something either here or in my personal journal. Mostly, I'd like to provide support for those suffering terminal writer's block. Valnye. Current Mood: chipper (3 Comments |Comment on this) |

_2:37 pm_[shaharazad] | Fantasy Epic in Verse (Part 2) Hi all,I'm still having trouble to find the time to dive back into a serious effort at writing prose fiction, but in the meantime here is the second "chapter" (you can find the first part in one of my early posts on this community) of my attempt at an epic fantasy poem.Just FYI, I understand very well that there's pretty much no market for this kind of thing. I'm publishing it in a zine I do, and at some point hope to hook up with an illustrator to reprint it in a nicer format.Feedback welcome.( King Bran's Daughter Part 2Collapse ) (Comment on this) |

_2:55 pm_[darkerwind] | Introduction Hi there!I suppose I should introduce myself for all the stalkers*/members of the community. I'm a female American teenager with a bad sense of humor, a passion for writing and who likes pina coladas and getting stuck in the rain*. And if you want to call me something, call me Jean (it's my name), or Dark (shorted LJ s/n). There ya go, introduction. But, I've been writing for about two years, and feel I'm doing pretty good for my age. I think.Well, I'm sure I'll like this community, you all seem pretty nice.*Examples of my bad sense of humor. Yay. Current Mood: calm (3 Comments |Comment on this) |

_9:28 pm_[nixxey] | Posting Stories Where would I post a story if I was worried about copyrighting problems? I'm not incredibly paranoid, but someone said that there was need to be careful. I read in an entry that I could post in the Friends part of my LJ, but how would I make it so only people of the community could read it? Any words o' wisdom or help? _9:07 pm_[tanglewingsff] | I just spent the last fifteen minnuets trying to figure out how to join a community. Well, now that thats over, I'm Alexandra and I live in California, so I can not attribute my basement confinement to the weather. I am a freshmen at Buckley, but I have just finished my exams and am on summer "vacation". I love fantasy and writing, but my school is small, and I am having trouble motivating my Writing Club. Firstly, none of us are interested in even remotely similar genres. Secondly, every time I try to suggest analyzing professional writing stylisticaly or talking about a book, mass hysteria breaks out, about the extra work and stress peppered with a few death threats. Thirdly, our new club adviser feels we should expand our focus, "is painting and singing not expression?", I tried to tell him that that is why many belong to both writing and art club and that "expanding our focus" would only expand the void already present, but of course I am not a 45 year old man with a degree in rhetoric teaching a middle school journalism class, so I wouldn't understand. I am currently in the process of building my world, though I have a good idea of the direction I want to take with my characters. I am so happy to finally have time to work. _1:42 pm_[nixxey] | Hello Hi, I just joined. I live in the land of ice and snow(Alaska) I'm a sophmore in high school. I really like reading and writing fantasy. I mainly write really short stories that are twisted fairy tales(what happened after snow white is one of my titles) but I'm trying to work on a couple longer ones. As mentioned above, I really like reading fantasy(some of my favorites are the Obernewtyn series, and His Dark Materiels) but it's harder and harder to find good fantasy books. If there are any recommendations, that'd be great! Current Mood: happy (6 Comments |Comment on this) |

_4:12 pm_[literate_pony] | Hi I'm new here and I thought I should introduce myself. I live in St. Louis, Missouri and I'm about to finish my freshman year in high school. I am currently working on a religious fantasy novel called Fateless. I'm not sure how long it will be, but I'm on chapter 15 at the moment. I rarely do short stories, and when I do, they usually are about 3,000 words long and take me a few months to finish. I am very busy, but I have time to critique pieces during weekends and vacations. _6:39 pm_[mrdiceyrum] | Greetings! I just wanted to give a little greeting to everyone! I got bored today and wanted to join a few new writing communities.A little about myself, I suppose. My name is Andy and I'm a full time student at Northern Illinois University. I'm in the process of changing my major from Computer Science(evil, I know) to English. I've been a fan of the fantasy genre for a long time. I'm working on a couple different novels that I hope will one day be among the shelves with other works. I'm also currently working on some short stories and write poetry from time to time.I can't wait to read and post in this community! Take care, everyone! _6:32 pm_[synocents] | Oi Greetings to all my fellow fantasy writers and writers-to-be. Allow me this brief introduction:My name is synocents, I am a new LJer and I am a writer. I am 23 years old, and live in Canada. Yeah, anyway, I can promise you that anything that I post here for you lucky, lucky readers won't be as brief and disjointed as this introduction is.One question, and forgive me if I sound like a dope, but how would I make a link to any writing I post for people to read when I do decide to post it?kthxbye Current Mood: apathetic (1 Comment |Comment on this) |

_8:32 pm_[queenofinsanity] | A Brief (-ish) Formal Greeting Hey everyone!Been looking for a nice safe (ha!) writing community for a while (10 minutes) now, and I came across this one. Seems like a good place to be, so I may as well introduce myself. My name is Jessica (hello Jessica), and I'm a 17 year old aspiring-writer/student from Toronto, which (for those that are sleeping) is that city over in Ontario (see: Canada) where the CN Tower lives, among other things. I've been writing for ages, and "seriously" for the past three years, though right now I've come up with very little that deserves to be mentioned at this point. I'm currently working on something that I'm really worried is too clichéd, but it's too soon to tell at this point. At the moment, I'm not getting much in the way of spare time, with dread school exams looming on the horizon, but I write whenever I can. I also read too much, act as a playwrite for my school's Drama Club, and spend hours in my basement. At least, I will until we get some good weather and I can go camping again. That should be about enough for now. Current Mood: awake (1 Comment |Comment on this) |

_7:13 pm_[canoeu] | FYI Hi all. I seem to be picking up on lots of people posting their writing work to their LJ's or on here. By posting it on a website or LJ where anyone can see it is giving away your first publishing rights. I don't know how many of you are seeking publishment, but if you are writing with the intent to ever have it published that will pose a big problem.Posting it on a private forum or as "Friends View" only on LJ will sidestep that whole issue. Just thought I would mention it again since I keep seeing it. If you want to be published it would be in your best interest to not post your writing to a public LJ or on a public website. If you want more info on this. Check out the Forward Motion website and do a search on "publishing rights". (Comment on this) |

_3:11 pm_[exsoldier] | Introduction :: Got around to zooming through some communities to join for writing, and I happened upon this one. ^__~ So.. Might as well join it and see where it goes, right? Here's the introduction then..My name's Michael; A fifteen year old student attending Quilcene High School (QHS). It's a rather small town, and a small school.. but everyone gets by. It's sort of humerous though in a way.. considering the average count of cows in this town exceeds the population of people. >.<Yeah yeah.. Hick town. Tell me about it. -___- Anyways, I've been writing idly since I was a bit younger, around 3rd grade or so (Ugh, I feel so young in this community already!) and I just sort of took off from there. Ended up going to several young writers conferences here in the Northwest, and I've continued on since then.Later on down the line, I was introduced to D&D (which is where my Fantasy elements came into play). After that.. I was hooked into Fantasy, and well here I am today ^__^.The journal I am posting this under right now is for writing only. You can read my actual LJ marakion if you'd like. Everyone is welcome to. ^__^. I currently maintain a site at http://insanity-break.net for Roleplaying, Music and various other things. Coding & Writing are my main two passions, with Baseball coming in at a close third.Yeeaaah.. I think thats enough of an intro, don't you think? See ya everyone. _10:31 am_[quarla] | Intro/Current project I'm currently working on a novel and already have rough ideas for two more when this one is finished. Problem is I just lost the person who inspired me and pushed me to write the novel, and it's 4 chapters away from the end (I'm on chapter 18 of 21). So after pumping out 5 chapters last week on my spring break (35,000 words) I'm sort of tired and drained, and after finding out about my teacher I think I'm going to take a bit of a break.I don't really write short stories. I used to but ever since last August all my attention and creative energies have been focused on my novel. And unfortunately I've been having a heck of a time finding readers to help me make sure the character development and scenes are doing well. I have plenty of people who are interested in ripping the grammatical problems apart but it's not at the stage where it needs that quite yet.So that's where I am at currently. ^^; I'm into a lot of different fantasy and scifi books. Don't really know how exactly to classify them though. Oops.. eheh..-= Quarla =- (4 Comments |Comment on this) |
