In conjunction with this, we also analysed employment pattern, working conditions and the mindset of migrants towards wage and working conditions. The study finds that most of the workers had migrated to Kerala at very young age, devoid of much education and skills, in response to narratives on better job opportunities and higher wages in Kerala. Analysis of employment pattern reveals that the migrants are employed in almost all sectors of the economy, except activities related to primary sector. Mostly they work under a contractor or permanent employer and preferred to accept the wages offered by them due the mindset that wage rates and working conditions are satisfactory. Our survey suggests that working conditions of migrants have improved with manageable workload, sufficient rest time and cordial approach of employers. The regression analysis of wage offer function reveals that experience and skill status are the major determinants of wage rate as they exert positive influence on wage rate.

For this purpose, we have estimated dynamic conditional correlations (DCC) between returns of four commodity futures indices and traditional asset class indices such as stock index, long-term bond index and Treasury bill index, separately for the pre-crisis and crisis period using the DCC–GARCH model and daily data ranging from June 2005 to September 2011. Empirical results reveal that there exist very low dynamic conditional correlations between commodity futures indices returns and traditional asset indices returns, an evidence illustrating the potential for portfolio diversification benefits of commodity futures. Commodity futures become more segmented from the traditional asset market; thus they can be effectively used for strategic asset allocation. Further, the conditional correlation between agriculture commodity future returns with long-run and short-run bond returns declined during the crisis period. Similarly, the conditional correlations of commodity futures indices returns (agriculture, energy and metal) with the stock index declined in periods of high volatility in the equity markets. These two findings indicate that the diversification benefits of commodity futures are most realized when the risks in traditional asset markets rise.

US financial crisis has made its upshots on both developed and developing economies of the world.... more US financial crisis has made its upshots on both developed and developing economies of the world. But India is not facing recession, experiencing an economic deceleration which normally considered as a temporary phenomenon. Analysis of financials of corporate of India reveals inter sectoral as well as intra sectoral difference among them in respect of their financial fundamentals during the period of crisis which could be attributed to many factors. Banking sector found opportunity for growth during the period of crisis, the credit of which goes to wise and judicious policies of the central bank of the country. Automobiles and construction sector most adversely hit by the crisis due to their high capital intensive nature and stringent measures taken by the lending institutions through cutting back of credit to individuals for adding luxuries to their personal life. Our IT industry is more exposed to US and European markets, the financial crisis in these advanced economies affected the export earnings of this sector. But sharp depreciation of the rupee helped them to compensate in aggregate what they have lost due to the crisis in global market. Domestic market orientation and not being very capital-intensive are among the factors that have insulated the FMCG sector from the downturn. The degree of shock exerted by the global financial turmoil on the performance of Indian corporate sector is also not same. When some companies under a particular sector severely hit by the crisis, fundamentally strong companies could unshackle from it.

On the supply side, trends in food availability in Kerala including domestic production, contribution of Public Distribution System and the extent of external dependence are examined. On the demand side, the factors influencing the economic access to food are examined. Further, to analyse the utilisation component of food security, different outcome indicators in the form of nutritional status of adults and children are also studied. Study reveals that the agriculture sector in Kerala has undergone major structural changes by increasing its area under commercial crops and reducing the area under food crops. As a result, the food production in Kerala has declined. However, the efficient functioning of Public Distribution System (PDS) ensured food availability in the state. But the policy changes implemented by the central government since libralisation had adversely affected the efficient functioning of PDS in Kerala and it ultimately resulted in increased external dependence. However, the economic access to food improved since per capita GSDP, real income, real wage and land entitlement have improved consistently. Nutritional status of men and women in the state is found to be better and the incidence of under nutrition among children has declined. Despite the high deficit on the production front what helps the state to achieve better health indicators and lower incidence of poverty is the better economic status. High vulnerability in case of food availability in the state calls for a very urgent policy attention on the production front.
