Just a year before in 2019, community colleges, universities and schools were thriving. 2020, however, was a year that none of us predicted, marked by the pandemic, as well as, other cataclysmic disrupters and shattering events. With a vastly different landscape, community colleges were confronted with dramatic shifts in how they operated and who they served. This article reflects on 2020, especially noting implications and challenges for community colleges. The pandemic highlighted inequities that already existed in society with opportunities for community colleges to model the way by being true to their egalitarian mission. Research questions are posed in areas of leadership; curriculum; funding; social and racial tension; self, family and community; and health and safety. A challenge for all who lead and study community colleges is to openly embrace these evolving questions and seek sound answers and creative solutions. Practitioners, leaders, policy makers and researchers are encouraged to learn from each other and to collaborate and document this era of challenge and change.

Rather, these programs focused on the scholarly and practical study of community college education and leadership, education, and programs with research requirements for doctoral degrees, but with little emphasis on publishing works. That is changing, however, as more graduate students and faculty alike value the processes and benefits of students learning how to publish their research, often with the guidance and mentorship of faculty advisors.

Each article presents prescribed practices that have led to community college successes across the United States. The special issue is methodical arranged within one of the three principle categories, which include mission-driven institutes, adaptability in alignment with mission, and strategic partnerships. The agility to which community colleges adhere to their myriad missions and respond to local workforce and community needs are expanded through the detailing of successful programs and initiatives. This exceptional collection delivers to the Community College Journal of Research and Practice reader informative approaches and practical protocols for program duplication. The articles are expressed from a practitioner’s viewpoint. Individually, the case studies broach a variety of topics from program development, student completion, free online course portal, and STEM curriculum redesign, to employee engagement in institutional improvement and a beneficial partnership model that led to vertical transfer success. I would like to express my gratitude to the guest editors, Dr Dale F. Campbell and Dr Xiaodan Hu, for curating and supervising the review process of this special issue. Their astute leadership and commitment have contributed to the scholarship of best practices, which have led to community college success.

One way to retain men of color staff members is to provide mentoring programs. While there are authors who are examining the benefits of mentoring, there has been little research into how men of color staff members of community college experience mentoring as a mentee and as a mentor. In this study we sought to understand how do men of color experience mentoring, both as mentor to undergraduate men of color and as staff mentees at a community college. The findings of our study include three common themes: investments made by mentors, investing in mentees, and support from administration.
