Amongst those collections, the Esope signed by Marie de France is of special interest since it is the first collection of fables known to be produced in the vernacular French, testifying, along with the Lais, of significant aspects of that debate. In this article, I argue that the poetical creation in the Esope is deeply connected with the philosophical and poetical dimensions of the hermeneutics of allegory and the use of image. A reading of fable 37, “Le Lion et le Paysan”, will illustrate this argument.

In distributed regression, a typical approach is to divide the big data into multiple blocks, apply a base regression algorithm on each of them, and then simply average the output functions learnt from these blocks. Since the average process will decrease the variance, not the bias, bias correction is expected to improve the learning performance if the base regression algorithm is a biased one. Regularization kernel network is an effective and widely used method for nonlinear regression analysis. In this paper we will investigate a bias corrected version of regularization kernel network. We derive the error bounds when it is applied to a single data set and when it is applied as a base algorithm in distributed regression. We show that, under certain appropriate conditions, the optimal learning rates can be reached in both situations.

The aim is to review some of those aspects starting with the works of historians, such as Jacques Le Goff and Georges Duby, which have inspired medieval studies from the standpoint of what is nowadays known as “historical anthropology”, as well as the system of anthropological structures of the imaginary set up by Gilbert Durand from which a vast and rich criticism of medieval imaginary has developed. The suggestions of Jean-Claude Schmitt opened the way to further works which proved to be as fruitful: taking a strong interest in the “body of images” (“corps des images”), Schmitt has at times turned to art history in search for his materials of study from which he has drawn some of his most suggestive insights on medieval history and culture. The rhetoric turn, specifically, the new interest in “images of thought” springing from Mary Carruthers’ and Jan Ziolkowski’s recent works has led medieval schola...

This property motivates a recursive formalization of the known decoding algorithms: Successive Cancellation, Successive Cancellation with Lists and Belief Propagation. Using such description allows an easy development of these algorithms for arbitrary polarizing kernels. Hardware architectures for these decoding algorithms are also described in a recursive way, both for Arikan's standard polar codes and for arbitrary polarizing kernels.

Project FALCO will look closely at the historical human links with raptors / birds of prey. Consisting of the avian families falconidae and accipitridae, raptors include
various species of hawk and falcon. These birds were no strangers to Portuguese (indeed European) medieval culture: human-raptor connections ranged from material partnerships to intellectual representation. The symbolism of raptors was well embedded in the medieval mind, yet as living beings raptors also played a role in a considerable range of human activities.
Through exploration and sustained debate, we aim by the end of the project to have reached a strong methodological foundation for the broad-ranging, cross-disciplinary investigation of medieval human-animal relations, set to work widely across subjects.
