The present version of OntoAndalus is aligned with DOLCE+DnS Ultralite (DUL), an established top-level ontology for the Semantic Web. This article describes the modelling assumptions underlying OntoAndalus, as well as the more relevant design patterns (i.e. artefact types, events and individuals). The latter are exemplified through relevant case studies in the domain, namely those of lighting artefacts, the life cycle of pottery and the several descriptions of Vaso de Tavira.

The approach followed in this paper places knowledge representation at the core of terminology work. More specifically, the development of an ontology, i.e. a formal and computational conceptualisation, enables the integration of a multilingual termbase in the semantic web as linked data, targeted at experts and students of archaeology. This approach allows for the preservation of linguistic diversity, as reflected by the different linguistic practices engaged by Portuguese and Spanish archaeologists in scholarly communication.

Developing an ontoterminology requires an interdisciplinary approach, which effectively places terminology as a subject matter between linguistics and knowledge representation and reasoning. The example of lighting artefacts shown in this paper demonstrates that the archaeological typologies have information that is implied or conflated in their proposed ordering of artefacts. While the purpose of the typologies is to express the names of artefact types in Islamic archaeology, the development of an ontoterminology requires a formalism in which the essential characteristics of each artefact type are made explicit. This allows for a better understanding of the typologies of artefacts through logical reasoning. Archaeological classification and ontoterminology

The purpose of the work described in this paper is the creation of an ontology-based multilingual terminological resource. Domain knowledge is represented through OntoAndalus, an OWL ontology which uses DOLCE+DnS Ultralite as a foundation. Language-specific information are modelled through Lemon, the Lexicon Model for Ontologies, which is currently in development by a community group within the W3C. Lemon allows for the representation of grammatical and semantic information , most notably lexicosemantic relations between terms and their reference to ontology elements in OntoAndalus.

This paper presents an overview of the ROSSIO Infrastructure, its main objectives, the institutions involved, and the services offered by the infrastructure’s aims through its platform—namely, a discovery portal, digital exhibitions, collections, and a virtual research environment. These services rely on a metadata-aggregation solution for bringing the digital objects’ metadata from the providing institutions into ROSSIO. The aggregated datasets are converted into linked data and undergo an enrichment process based on controlled vocabularies, which are developed and published by ROSSIO. The paper will describe this process, the applications involved, and how they interoperate. We will further reflect on how these services may enhance the dissemination of science, considering the FAIR principles.
