The objectives of this field study, therefore, were to determine the proportions of cows with spontaneous clinical recovery or persistence of postpartum endometritis and to determine some risk factors for its persistency in dairy cows (Bos taurus). Holstein-Friesian cows (n = 441 lactations) from seven dairy herds were examined monthly by vaginoscopy and transrectal palpation. A cow was considered to have ''postpartum endometritis'' if it had pus in the cervico-vaginal discharge at the first postpartum examination during Days 15 to 60 (Day 0 = day of calving); this was classified as mild, mucopurulent, or purulent endometritis, or endometritis with fluid in uterus. Furthermore, a cow with evidence of endometritis at least once during Days 61 to 150 was considered to have ''persistence (or recurrence) of endometritis.'' A total of 104 (23.6%) lactations had postpartum endometritis, of which 25.3% had persistence or recurrence of clinical endometritis. Cows with persistence or recurrence of endometritis became pregnant at a slower rate (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.28; P < 0.001) than those with no endometritis until Day 150. Calving in summer (odds ratio [OR] = 7.00; P = 0.04), early postpartum complications (OR = 6.58; P = 0.05), moderate (OR = 4.03; P = 0.08) and severe (OR = 30.99; P = 004) degrees of urovagina, and mucopurulent (OR = 9.54; P = 0.02) and purulent (OR = 5.70; P = 0.04) endometritis were risk factors for the persistence or recurrence of endometritis. Furthermore, 10.6% of cows that had not shown signs of postpartum endometritis had a new diagnosis of endometritis during Days 61 to 150. Some risk factors for the new diagnosis of endometritis beyond Day 60 were early postpartum complications (OR = 2.82; P = 0.03) and moderate (OR = 5.00; P = 0.001) or severe (OR = 12.63; P < 0.001) degrees of urovagina. In conclusion, approximately one quarter of cows with postpartum endometritis had persistence of endometritis until or beyond the breeding period. Risk factors for the persistence of clinical endometritis were summer calving, early postpartum complications, clinically relevant urovagina, and clinically relevant endometritis within 2 mo postpartum. #

The colonization abilities of two endophytic diazotrophs, Pantoea sp. strain 18 isolated from swe... more The colonization abilities of two endophytic diazotrophs, Pantoea sp. strain 18 isolated from sweet potato and Enterobacter sp. strain 35 isolated from sugarcane, in cultivated rice (Oryza sativa cv. Nipponbare) and wild rice (Oryza officinalis) were investigated using two inoculation methods: rhizosphere inoculation and the root dip method. Higher bacterial densities resulted from the root dip method for both strains. Higher bacterial numbers of both strains were detected in cultivated rice than in wild rice. The use of green fluorescent protein-labeled strains indicated that Pantoea sp. 18-2 was able to better colonize and more effectively reduce the acetylene in both hosts compared with Enterobacter sp. 35-1. Specifically, the combination of cultivated rice and Pantoea sp. strain 18-2 gave the best association for colonization and nitrogen fixing. The present study provides evidence that Pantoea sp. strain 18-2 and Enterobacter sp. strain 35-1 can be established in rice plants other than their original hosts, suggesting a lack of host specificity, although the extent of colonization may vary depending on the combination of host and endophyte.

Holstein Friesian cows (n=135) from two commercial dairy herds were examined vaginoscopically and by per rectal palpation of genital organs for the first time between 15 and 60d postpartum. Cows with any proportion of pus in the cervico-vaginal discharge were defined as having endometritis and were classified into mild, mucopurulent, or purulent endometritis or postpuerperal metritis. The overall prevalence of endometritis during early (15-20d), intermediate (21-28d) and late (29-60d) postpartum period was 67.8%, 40.5% and 14.4%, respectively. Survival analysis was used to derive a case definition of clinically relevant endometritis based on factors associated with reduced pregnancy rate. Accounting for different factors, mucopurulent and purulent endometritis and postpuerperal metritis, but not mild endometritis each was associated with a significant decrease in pregnancy rate. The presence of mucopurulent or purulent cervico-vaginal discharge on vaginoscopy between 15 and 60d postpartum was defined as clinically relevant endometritis. The prevalence of clinically relevant endometritis was 25.9%. Cows with clinically relevant endometritis had a hazard ratio of 0.39 (P=0.001) for pregnancy (61% reduction in pregnancy rate) and a hazard ratio of 0.40 (P=0.001) for pregnancy per insemination.
