The widespread use of multimedia services on the World Wide Web and the advances in end-user port... more The widespread use of multimedia services on the World Wide Web and the advances in end-user portable devices have recently increased the user demands for better quality. Moreover, providing these services seamlessly and ubiquitously on wireless networks and with user mobility poses hard challenges. To meet these challenges and fulfill the end-user requirements, suitable strategies need to be adopted at both application level and network level. At the application level rate and quality have to be adapted to time-varying bandwidth limitations, whereas on the network side a mechanism for efficient use of the network resources has to be implemented, to provide a better end-user Quality of Experience (QoE) through better Quality of Service (QoS). The work in this thesis addresses these issues by first investigating multi-stream rate adaptation techniques for Scalable Video Coding (SVC) applications aimed at a fair provision of QoE to end-users. Rate Distortion (R-D) models Last but not the least I am thankful to University of Ferrara for giving me the opportunity and funding me during these three years of my Ph.D.

The increasing load demand in residential area and irregular electricity load profile encouraged ... more The increasing load demand in residential area and irregular electricity load profile encouraged us to propose an efficient Home Energy Management System (HEMS) for optimal scheduling of home appliances. We propose a multi-objective optimization based solution that shifts the electricity load from On-peak to Off-peak hours according to the defined objective load curve for electricity. It aims to manage the trade-off between conflicting objectives: electricity bill, waiting time of appliances and electricity load shifting according to the defined electricity load pattern. The defined electricity load pattern helps in balancing the load during On-peak and Off-peak hours. Moreover, for real-time rescheduling, concept of coordination among home appliances is presented. This helps the scheduler to optimally decide the ON/OFF status of appliances to reduce the waiting time of the appliance. Whereas, electricity consumers have stochastic nature, for which, nature-inspired optimization techniques provide optimal solution. For optimal scheduling, we proposed two optimization techniques: binary multi-objective bird swarm optimization and a hybrid of bird swarm and cuckoo search algorithms to obtain the Pareto front. Moreover, dynamic programming is used to enable coordination among the appliances so that real-time scheduling can be performed by the scheduler on user's demand. To validate the performance of the proposed nature-based optimization techniques, we compare the results of proposed schemes with existing techniques such as multiobjective binary particle swarm optimization and multi-objective cuckoo search algorithms. Simulation results validate the performance of proposed techniques in terms of electricity cost reduction, peak to average ratio and waiting time minimization. Also, test functions for convex, non-convex and discontinuous Pareto front are implemented to prove the efficacy of proposed techniques. C2F2C is a three layered framework consisting of cloud layer, fog layer and consumer layer. Cloud layer deals with on-demand delivery of the consumer’s demands. Resource management is intelligently done through the fog layer because it reduces the latency and enhances the reliability of cloud. Consumer layer is based on the residential users and their electricity demands from the six regions of the world. These regions are categorized on the bases of the continents. Two control parameters are considered: clusters of buildings and load requests, whereas four performance parameters are considered: Request Per Hour (RPH), Response Time (RT), Processing Time (PT) and cost in terms of Virtual Machines (VMs), Microgrids (MGs) and data transfer. These parameters are analysed by the round robin algorithm, equally spread current ex...

A nonrandom and periodic training sequence is proposed to be added arithmetically on the information sequence for energy efficient channel estimation within the future generation of wireless receivers. This eliminates the need of separate overhead time/frequency slots for training sequence. The results of the proposed technique are compared with the techniques in the existing literature-the notable first order statistics based channel estimation technique with ST. The normalized channel mean-square error (NCMSE) and bit-error-rate (BER) are chosen as performance measures for the simulation based analysis. It is established that the proposed technique performs better in terms of the accuracy of estimated channel; subsequently the quality of service (QoS), while retrieving information sequence at the receiver. With respect to its comparable counterpart, the proposed GA based scheme delivers an improvement of about 1dB in NCMSE at 12 dB SNR and a gain of about 2 dB in SNR at 10-1 BER, for the population size set at twice the length of channel. It is also demonstrated that, this achievement in performance improvement can further be enhanced at the cost of computational power by increasing the population size.

Moreover the packet switched network provides more flexibility, security and ease of use with existing as well as old technologies. The deployment of Voice over IP (VoIP) has already paved the path for Fax over IP (FoIP) that is why the corporate world is already benefiting from the Fax over IP. The benefit of cost can further be increased by using multicasting fax over IP. Real time fax cannot be used when the receiving fax machine is not active, only Store and Forward (S&F) fax can be used because of its storing capability of the fax data and delivering it later on when the fax machine is ready or active till gateway timeout. In this paper, a novel approach of multicasting is introduced for Store and Forward fax over IP system, ...

Scalability can be exploited in order to provide a better video quality for the end user in video transmission over wireless networks. In this paper we develop a parametric Rate Distortion (R-D) model for Medium Grain Scalability (MGS) SVC depending only on two indexes describing the spatial and temporal complexity of video sequences. The two indexes can be easily obtained from the original raw video, thus enabling real time video adaptation for transmission over channels with variable bandwidth such as wireless channels. The results from simulations show that the use of the proposed model for rate adaptation of multiple-videos sharing a common channel results in an end user video quality comparable to that obtained by using a more accurate non-real time rate distortion model.

This paper presents a novel approach that employs genetic algorithm (GA) to estimate the sparse uplink MIMO channels using superimposed training sequence (SiT). At each transmitter (user) a training sequence is mathematically added with the data bits; thus, avoiding the overhead of dedicated frequency/time slots used for the training. On the receiver side (base station), signals received at all the receive antennas are jointly processed by employing the proposed method to obtain channels' estimate. Then, a linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) equalizer estimates the data sequences sent by transmitter. A computer simulation based performance analysis of the proposed method is presented, where performance evaluation is done using metrics of normalized channel mean square error (NCMSE), as well as, bit error rate (BER). A comparative analysis of the proposed method with notable SiT least squares (SiT-LS) and SiT-LMMSE methods in the literature is conducted, which clearly demonstrates that the proposed method outperforms both the existing techniques.

In this scenario, rate adaptation is required to optimize the overall quality, whereas fairness is an important issue that has to be addressed. In this paper we propose a multi-stream rate adaptation framework with reference to the scalable video coding (SVC) extension of the H.264/AVC standard with medium grain scalability (MGS). We first define a general discrete multi-objective problem with the aim to maximize the sum of assigned rates, while minimizing the differences among the expected distortions, under a total bit-rate constraint. A single-objective problem formulation is then derived by applying a continuous relaxation. Finally, a simplified continuous semi-analytical model that accurately estimates the rate-distortion relationship for both error-free channel and packet-erasure channel is also proposed, which allows us to derive an optimal and low-complexity procedure to solve the relaxed problem. Unequal erasure protection (UXP) is also considered and designed to suitably shape the rate-distortion relationship for different values of RTP packet-loss rate. The numerical results show the goodness of our framework in terms of error gap between the relaxed and its related discrete solution, and the significant performance improvement achieved with respect to an equal-rate adaptation scheme.
