Research paper thumbnail of Molecular coherent scattering data for tissue in photon transport Monte Carlo codes

Applied Radiation and Isotopes, 2000

The suitability of introducing molecular interference effects into coherent scattering phenomenol... more The suitability of introducing molecular interference effects into coherent scattering phenomenology is considered here in the case of X and gamma photon transport in biological tissues. In order to make its implementation practicable in most of the existing open user Monte Carlo codes, a self-consistent basic set of tabulations for the linear differential scattering coefficient was proposed. The tabulations were critically reviewed by testing their validity over the entire range of the momentum transfer variable from 0 to 10(10) nm(-1). Implementation in three different Monte Carlo codes was performed, and they proved to be reliable.

The presence of functional NK1 receptors has already been documented in malignant brain tumors of glial origin, medullary thyroid cancer, non-small cell lung cancer and pancreatic carcinoma 99mTc and 188Re radiolabeled SP was tested for cell surface binding after incubation with NK1 receptor expressing U-87 MG cells, and negative control cell line L-929 and preliminary whole-body biodistribution studies were carried out with 99mTc labeled SP using a hybrid SPECT/CT YAP(S)PET small-animal tomography scanner. Our results using 99mTc and 188Re radiolabeled SP, demonstrated the affinity of these radioconjugates for NK1 receptor expressing cells, showing pronounced cell surface binding after incubation with U-87 MG cells, compared to the negative control cell line L-929. In the PVLAS apparatus photons from a laser beam interact in vacuum with an external magnetic field, and the two-photon interaction results in the possible production of neutral, nearly massless, scalar/pseudoscalar particles. Evidence of particle production is extracted from the study of the light polarisation state after traversing a region where a the magnetic field is provided by a superconducting dipole magnet. Polarisation measurements are conducted using a very sensitive ellipsometer based on a high finesse (~100000), 6.4 m long, Fabry-Perot optical resonator. The PVLAS apparatus is now fully integrated and operational: the first commissioning run with a 4.0 T field has been successfully completed, the first data taking runs have been conducted, yielding a total integration time of about 20 hours, and data analysis is now in progress. We will present details from the commissioning run and preliminary results from the data runs

The Doppler angle between ultrasound (US) line and blood flow requires a manual adjustment. Establishing this parameter is critical in order to calculate blood velocity. However, the operator dependency gives high variable results. It is worth noting that a new class of vector Doppler devices can enhance the accuracy and precision of measurements. Such technology uses a double US line that leads to automatically know the Doppler angle. By comparing in an…

The complexes are represented by the general formula [(99m)Tc(N)(PNP)(L)](+), where L is the monoanionic form of a dithiocarbamate ligand of the type [R(1)(R(2))-N-C(=S)S](-), PNP is a diphosphine ligand of the type [(R(3))(2)P-(CH(2))(2)](2)-N(R(4)), and R(1)-R(4) are organic functional groups. The new complexes were prepared by use of both liquid and freeze-dried formulations through a 2-step procedure. The first step involved the formation of the [TcN](2+) group through the reaction of (99m)TcO(4)(-) with succinic dihydrazide as a donor of nitride nitrogen atoms (N(3-)) in the presence of Sn(2+) ions. This step was followed by the simultaneous addition to the reaction solution of the ligand PNP and of the sodium salt of the dithiocarbamate ligand (NaL) to afford the final products, [(99m)Tc(N)(PNP)(L)](+). Each detector module is composed of a matrix of 400 YAP:Ce finger crystals (2×2×30 mm3 each) directly coupled to position sensitive photomultipliers (Hamamatsu R2486-06). By applying two high resolution collimators to two opposite detectors we realised an integrated PET-SPECT scanner for small animals. At present, at the Department of Experimental and Clinical Medicine of the University of Ferrara, the scanner is employed in small animal SPECT studies with 99mTc labeled radiotracers dedicated to obtain quantitative activity measurement in region of interest (ROI) directly from a reconstructed image of a in-vivo rat, with respect to the traditional ex-vivo measurement of activity with gamma counters. To achieve this goal, the scanner was calibrated referring it to a Isodose dose calibrator based on Geiger-Muller counters which previously underwent an absolute calibration with a known activity source. Preliminary results on quantitative tomographic heart perfusion and planar heart biokinetics studies are reported.
