Fanficrants' Discussion Comm (original) (raw)
junkteen posted the age old question/rant about the lack of in depth reviews:
I'm in the middle of writing a 12 part story. I recently posted chapter ten. I am annoyed. Here's why.
I spend days, if not weeks, writing and perfecting each chapter. Making sure what I'm writing is canon-compliant, in character, worth reading, realistic, etc. Then, when I decide I'm happy, my BETA reader and I spend hours tweaking it, questioning it, perfecting it, etc.
Then I post my work with pride.
I receive reviews.
"Write more!"
"yay! You updated!"
"Can't wait for the next chapter."
While I understand these are compliments, they're obviously happy to read my story; I find myself really irritated and almost hurt. I work hard on each piece of my work, and all people do is demand more. They don't tell me what they like, or what they don't like. They don't give me any criticism or praise, they just want me to write more. This has lead me to being resentful and annoyed at the whole story. I just want a freaking review that actually has some depth to it. Even if it's a "Wow, really loved this chapter."
Am I being a spoiled bitch, or am I at least a little entitled to feel this way?
Fortunately I replied, therefore have a copy of the orginal post in my email. Because after only 4 comments, junkteen deleted the post! I think it may be a record. *LOL*
My comment: You're not entitled to any reviews, much less reviews with some depth to them. *rolls eyes*
junkteen's reply: So. One vote for 'spoiled bitch.'
mika_kun's comment: "Can't wait for the next chapter" isn't *demanding* more - as you said the story isn't complete, the reader is letting you know they're excited to read more.
"Yay! You updated" is even more obviously NOT demanding anything.
I would think that it was obviously that this would be the equivalent of "Wow, really loved this chapter!" otherwise, they *wouldn't* be excited that you updated or for the next chapter.
synnerxx's comment: Hasn't this been said before? You're not entitled to reviews. Good or bad.
spartanwerewolf's comment: Sorry, but you're being spoiled (you asked). Most of us would be thrilled to get *one* review after we update. You are not entitled to reviews OR depth. Join a review and kudos comm if that's the sort of thing you're looking for.
